Most people in today western society think that their ancestors made up their current cultures and traditions by themselves. Unfortunately for them, they were incorrect. Most of western societies are based upon Greek culture and ideas that were passed down to the Romans, to Europe, and then to Americas. The people in western society would still be sharing the same characteristics with the ancient world. “There is no doubt that Greece has been the largest single source of the elements that compose modern European civilization” (Martin Bernal). The government was a loose federation of cooperating city-states. America is a form of this because each state has its own power, though; the American has a strengthened central authority. Other countries have federated provinces that do the same thing. Written laws were intended to create a more just system of government. Democracy meant that people participated in their government in various ways -- they might be part of, the Council, or the Courts. Since humans had the ability to reason and understand, they believed that they were capable of discipline, sacrifice, and self-rule. Today, many western governments are a democracy, although, every person has much more influence on government decisions than ancient Greek civilians. The people such as Americans, elect regional representatives who they think stand for their ideas and needs, and then they vote on bills. Trial by jury was also in ancient Greece. The trial of Socrates is the most famous of these. A jury of 500 people found him guilty and sentenced him to death for what they considered wrongdoings.

Since Ancient Greece was along the shore and a small amount of fertile land was available to farm, they became great fisherman and sailors.
