Imagine being the gods in this tale; Gilgamesh is running amuck, and, as greater beings, the gods are thereby expected to be able to control his behavior. I believe the creation of Enkidu could be a last-ditch effort to try to control the king of a nation who was acting like a crazed teenager. By giving Gilgamesh a friend, it is as if the gods were giving him a peer mentor. The young king can relate to Enkidu; they are both virile men who enjoy adventure. Yet, Enkidu is a “toned down” version of Gilgamesh, which allows Enkidu to act as a sort of conscience for him. Enkidu watches over his best friend and tries to steer him in a good direction.
