They created Google, then known as BackRub, to search websites for relevancy based on the number of backlinks that pointed to it. In 1998, the two students raised capital and Google, Inc. became a corporation. Google has adopted 10 principles which it uses to govern its corporate philosophy; the founders wanted to prove that a company could be successful by “doing no evil” (Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble, & Strickland III, 2014, pp. C-169). This philosophy has worked very well for them. In 2012, Google was the most visited Internet site in the world. Google has the potential to remain the leading search engine, using its current strategy, as well as leading the technology world in its other innovations.
Google’s Mission and Vision A mission statement is designed to identify a company and its purpose, services, customers, and unique identity (Thompson, Peteraf, Gamble, & Strickland III, 2014, p. 24). Google’s mission statement is “…to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” (Google, 2014). Essentially, this fulfills the three requirements of a proper mission statement, though it could be improved. It identifies the products and services as organizing information in useful and accessible methods. The statement identifies that the world is the customer.
