The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller as a comparison to the great red scare of the 1920s. It had a dramatic effect on the entertainment industry and even Arthur himself. The events of the 1680s and 1690s witch accusations were very similar to the Red Scare communist ones of the 1920s. Communism is a form of government where all economic and social activity is controlled by a dominating and perpetual party. Joseph McCarthy of the U.S senate accused Dean Acheson of the U.S secretary of state of being a communist and that he knew that there were 57 other communists in the department. An investigation proceeded. This destroyed many people’s lives as the Salem Witch trials once did. This may have been as act of jealousy and same can be said for the Salem Witch trials. Abigale Williams not only lied about there being witchcraft in Salem but even forced other to be a part of it. She was the niece of Reverend Parris and thought she could get away from any trouble she had gotten herself into or even started herself. She didn’t want to be singled out by having a different testimony then all the other girls so she sought them out and threatened their lives so that they would change theirs to be in agreement with hers. To include Goody Proctor she stuck a needle in herself because she knew that Proctor had a poppet at home with one in it.
