The Crucible Character Analysis

John Proctor is a very friendly man. Everyone likes being his friend. He is open, kind, helpful, upright, blunt-spoken, and just a good, hard-working man. John has lots of faith in God but little in humans. He knows that mankind is good but he also knows that they are weak and imperfect. “Proctor: I’ve heard you to be a sensible man, Mr. Hale. I hope you’ll leave some of it in Salem”.

Before the play took place John had an affair with Abigail but, when push came to shove he confessed it to the court. While he was trying to prove the legitimacy of Abigail and show the court that she is not as authentic as they first believed. John tells the court, “I have known her.” (Miller 110). By doing this, he has honor and integrity because of the difficulties in revealing it to the court; while knowing the crimes for lechery. Near the end of the book when push came to shove John was faced with a decision: to have honor/integrity and die, or to lie, betray your friends and live to fight another day; he chose death. After tearing the confession he just wrote he cries, “I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor.” (Miller 144). In saying this, it takes an enormous amount of integrity to be willing to die to stand up for the truth. He does this because he is honorable and willing to die for something he believes in. John was honorable even though he once made a mistake by cheating with Abigail; he had an opportunity to make up for it, and he did. When Abigail is trying to convince John to come to her and that they still loved each other and it was okay to do so, John responds, “but we did not.” (Miller 23). By responding this way he is clearly trying to cut it off and regain some of that honor that he once had. He does this because he remembers how his wife feels about what he did and that by

He commits adultery by cheating on his wife with Abigail. Although this may be true, he atones for his sin by sacrificing his own reputation, something he highly values to save his wife. In addition, he stays true to himself and does not confess, so that the same sacrifice others had made would not be in vain. In addition, he shows a crucial emotion that is needed for redemption. The emotion he shows throughout the play is guilt. Guilt displays remorse, and remorse is only felt when the afflicted acknowledge their wrongdoing and feel the need to redeem themselves. Those who do not regret their actions do not feel guilt. Because John Proctor is an admirable character, he becomes trapped in his own cage of guilt, determined to save his wife and atone for his sin, even when he knew he would be executed for

People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.

Proctor 's decision to tell the court about his affair ironically demonstrates his goodness. He also spoke up for the innocent girls that had their names branded. He willingly sacrifices his good name in order to protect his wife and others who are wrongly accused. Only through his public acknowledgment of the affair does Proctor regain his wife 's trust. At the end of the play, Proctor refuses to slander himself by allowing the court to make him make a false confession. The court told him to lie, and that if he lies that he would not be sent to the gallows. He did the right decision by telling the truth about his affair with Abigail. He honestly told the truth about the affair, and that he was not part of the witchcraft. His response further exemplifies Proctor 's integrity. But John was not guilty. He had nothing to do with witchcraft, he admitted to his own mistakes. Proctor knows that if he confesses that he will be damned himself, yet again, if he agrees to confess, he will also be free from the torment from the demon inside him and set others free too. This realization, along with Elizabeth 's forgiveness, enables Proctor to forgive himself and finally regain his good name and self-respect. As the court

The primary dramatic focus in the play The Crucible is the moral struggle of its protagonist, John Proctor. Certain characteristics of John Proctor's character and also the environment of the Puritanical Salem alleviated this problem for him. The main issues running through out the play are a series of dilemmas that John Proctor faces. The first and foremost of these is his guilt over his adulterous affair with Abigail Williams, the second his hesitation to testify against Abigail to bring out the truth and the third, his final decision to make the ultimate sacrifice.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, it takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during colonial America. Throughout the story a group of girls makes accusations a mass of people of practicing witchcraft, one of the worst crimes to commit during that period, and people are being sentenced to hang for denying witchery. In the Crucible there are many lessons that Arthur Miller wants to teach you. To me a lot of the lessons that were taught in this story are important but I feel like one of them is the most important. Arthur Miller demonstrates that one of the lessons implied in the story is people’s character and how it affects those people and others. Examples of character are Giles Corey, John Proctor, Abigail Williams.

Rebellious, guilt-ridden, intelligent, and outspoken describes John Proctor. He is the main character in the drama: The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Over two-hundred innocent people were convicted of witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 when hysteria swept through the town, no one could believe their closest friends. John Proctor and others show the consequences of Abigail accusing everyone of witchcraft. John shows us that suffering harsh consequences is better than lying.

In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a story that displays a tragic hero and many women who deceived about interacting with witchery. Proctor's life completely turned upside down when Abigail started all these lies and put the people he loved and cared to their death or jail.  John Proctor's fatal flaw was his great amount of pride, that continued a series of unfortunate events. Unfortunately, Proctor died for a crime he did not commit.

He confesses to get his wife Elizabeth out of prison and uncover the reason for her being accused. He knows that Abigail is trying to get Elizabeth killed so that her desire to marry John can finally be met. John realized this and again spoke out against injustice. Proctor wanted to honor those who died faithfully and therefore admits to the sin he has been hiding. He feels he “cannot mount the gibbet like a saint”(136) and therefore first admits to lechery before he is executed.

During this time, John has been arrested for lechery and witchcraft, due to his admission of his affair with Abigail, and Mary Warren’s accusation. He is given the opportunity to confess to witchcraft, and save himself from hanging. At first, he confesses, as Elizabeth says that whatever his decision, it was made by a good man. However, as he further contemplates his decision, he rips up his confession, and says he can hang. Since Elizabeth forgives him, John is able to forgive himself, as he says “...for now I do think I see some shred of goodness in John Proctor” (Miller, 144). This scene shows that The Proctor's relationship is a loving, caring relationship at the end, as opposed to a cold, fake relationship in the beginning.

He cheated on his loving wife, breaks it off with his girlfriend, and now his girlfriend is out to get his wife and his family. Cheating on his wife is what got him into the mess he’s in so he’s feeling pretty bad for him. Proctor then breaks it off with Abigail, his girlfriend, and then confesses his love for his wife and promises to remain loyal to her. “Proctor: Abby, you’’ll put it out of mind. I’’ll not be comin’’ for you more.”

“The true hero is flawed. The true test of a champion is not whether he can triumph, but whether he can overcome obstacles – preferably of his own making – in order to triumph” (Garth Stein). In this quote, Stein perfectly describes one of the many themes portrayed in The Crucible. In the story The Crucible by Arthur Miller a group of groups in Puritan society are caught dancing in the woods and blame their actions on witchcraft. Soon after the girls bring up witchcraft, a chain reaction starts through the town and people are accused of witchcraft left and right, and so begins the Salem witch trials. Many innocent people are accused punished and occasionally even killed. One man, John Proctor, is accused but becomes somewhat of a hero in the story even though he has made mistakes in his life. The Crucible depicts this idea that a man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. Proctor’s biggest flaw is an affair with his servant Abigail Williams. John Proctor made many other mistakes in his life but his bravery, his nonconformist attitude and his pride are the traits that made him an
