Directed by Nicholas Hytner, the movie is based on a 1953 play by Arthur Miller. The plot is heavily inspired by the Salem, Massachusetts witch trials in 1692. The town is being ruled by theocracy. Religion as the law is being manipulated through accusations, lies, paranoia, fear, hunger for power and rumours. People take advantage of empowerment and misuse authority to get what they desire. The movie highlights the evil in people which in turn creates unimaginable and chaotic situations. These observations in turn creates hysteria and further illuminates the disturbing qualities in Salem. Towards the end of his “confession”, a catharsis happened. The fact that he screams out “I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” shows me how he had to carried the internal struggle within himself for so long. I might be looked upon as weird and sadist to love such an emotional scene. But I love the fact that I can literally feel the overwhelmed emotions of his suppressed feelings. All characters did not have the typical ending. It was a pity that the movie could not portray the whole plot in detail compared to the play. According to the play which gives more details of the ending, the main antagonist did not suffer and even ran away with riches. Whereas, the main protagonist died in what he believed in which the movie has revealed. Basically, the bad lived and the good died. Killings were carried on due to the lack of confessions. Dying can be seen negativity but it was the solution to the protagonist’s problems. However, for the death of many just for accusations. Is it worth it? It is also quite scary to think that this actually happened in the real world before. I really wonder what I would do in that situation. Would I have the same ending like the characters in the movie?
