The character I have chosen to analyze is John Proctor. Throughout the course of the play,we find out more about his background. In the beginning we found out he had an affair with Abigail, but as the play progresses, he goes to court to fight for his wife. This shows me that he has become a more dependable person to rely on but, he is still feared by the many people in Salem. He is known to have a “sharp and biting way with hypocrites,” (pg16) but some don’t take him seriously anymore after his affair with Abigail Williams. The whole play pretty much revolved around him, him being the main character and the one who is the source of everyone's problems. In proctors eyes, he had committed a terrible sin of adultery and resents Elizabeth. He
“Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again,” happens to be a quote from John Proctor whilst he was speaking to Abigail Williams in Act One of The Crucible. John Proctor happens to be a hard-working farmer from Salem with strong Puritan beliefs. Although John is a religious Puritan man he has some downfalls within the play The Crucible. His first downfall would be him committing adultery with a seventeen year old named Abigail Williams, who was his servant at the time. After committing said adultery with the teenage girl, he keeps it a secret from his wife until she fires Abigail and kicks her out of their house. After that his wife is accused of being a witch by Abigail because of him not wanting to be with Abigail anymore. He finally tells the truth about the affair while in court and is accused of being a witch after screaming “God is dead,” he then was hung three months later. So, if there is one character I can most closely relate myself to it would be John Proctor. Three character traits that I share with John Proctor is that we are both honest, hard-working, and caring.
At the beginning of the play, he is, at least in public, an honorable and honest man. When Abigail Williams's jealousy of Proctor's wife Elizabeth sparks witch-hunting hysteria in Salem, Proctor is faced with a difficult decision of whether to admit to his affair with Williams and ruin his name or to remain silent and lose his own integrity. Ultimately he chooses to admit his affair and is condemned as a
John Proctor is a man, in this residential area of Salem, Massachusetts, with an incredible notoriety under his name. He is the spouse of Elizabeth Proctor, remorseful partner of Abigail Williams, and father of four. In this blasted town, he is the main redeemable man actually when you consider his blames; his breaking point and everything that he is carried out. He's not flawless, however he is sympathizable in the way that he, regardless of what the expense he will settle his wrongs and tries to be a finer man. John is similar to the rest of society simply living his life to the best he can.
His sin of adultery disturbs him more and more as time goes on “ My honesty is broken Elizabeth i am no good man”, he feels bad for what he has done to Elizabeth he knows he needs to come clean soon. John also says “ I speak my own sins; i cannot judge another.” This shows how much integrity he has and he will condemn himself but will not mimic others for the wrong that they have done. Eventually Proctor confesses to his sin of adultery to the courts to stop everything going on in town. He then encourages his wife Elizabeth to confess also, she says he is looking out for the good of the community and he hates how tarnished his name has became around town hoping god will soon forgive him.
John Proctor is only reason mayhem started in Salem. It really all started with his urges as a man. By being a pervert to 17 year girl. Which caused jealousy and soon defrauding that affected others mentally and physically.
Has one ever been torn between a lie or the truth and couldn't find a way around either but then you decide to go with one of the two options a lie or the truth. John proctor was stuck in that exact situation but he chose to stick to his guns and go with the truth where he could have went ahead and lied about being a witch. Also he had to choose between one or the other because he was subject to being a witch. Also when he made his decision his wife was there to have his back and she told him to go with his heart and he did as she told him to do. The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the three character traits that john proctor displays are integrity , pride, and stubbornness. The first trait that john proctor shows is that he has alot of integrity and he doesn't like to ruin it over some lie. The first thing that he says that shows he has alot of integrity is" You doubt me yet"(miller1270). That quote shows that he has that much integrity in himself that he dont think that anyone should doubt him. The next quote that shows that he has alot of integrity is " oh elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer"(miller1270). This quote shows that he has so much integrity that he believes that his
“The true hero is flawed. The true test of a champion is not whether he can triumph, but whether he can overcome obstacles – preferably of his own making – in order to triumph” (Garth Stein). In this quote, Stein perfectly describes one of the many themes portrayed in The Crucible. In the story The Crucible by Arthur Miller a group of groups in Puritan society are caught dancing in the woods and blame their actions on witchcraft. Soon after the girls bring up witchcraft, a chain reaction starts through the town and people are accused of witchcraft left and right, and so begins the Salem witch trials. Many innocent people are accused punished and occasionally even killed. One man, John Proctor, is accused but becomes somewhat of a hero in the story even though he has made mistakes in his life. The Crucible depicts this idea that a man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. Proctor’s biggest flaw is an affair with his servant Abigail Williams. John Proctor made many other mistakes in his life but his bravery, his nonconformist attitude and his pride are the traits that made him an
This shows that he is aware of his mistakes and is anxious to atone for them. He states that he would “fall like an ocean on that court” (204) when Elizabeth is convicted. This quote demonstrates Proctor’s determination to save his wife and shows that he is willing to do anything to do so, even confessing to adultery. Ironically, when Proctor does confess to the lecherous act, Elizabeth defends him and denies his involvement in a naive attempt to save her husband. The decision to confess not only proves Proctor's loyalty to Elizabeth, but also proves his honorable
Considered the most dynamic main character of The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor undergoes great changes and developments throughout each act. From the very beginning of the play, Proctor is nothing more than a lying, cheating man with secrets to hide. However, he learns to clear his conscience and alter his actions with no regard to the consequences he may suffer. He goes to great lengths to admit to his lies, clear unfairly soiled names, and be truthful to his wife and God. Despite his initial flaws, Proctor is seen to grow into a caring husband and friend at the cost of everything.
A dynamic character is one to change with time throughout a plot. Many characters in The Crucible are amending characters. In the play titled, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the characters, John Proctor, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth change from the beginning of the play to the end. Proctor becomes more honest; Abigail grows to be selfless; and Elizabeth finally acts with peace towards others.
In Arthur Miller’s famous play, The Crucible, multiple characters grow and develop throughout the production. The people of Salem experience many hardships, as well as conflicts with the court and other villagers; however, John Proctor is the most interesting character to watch as he changes throughout this process. His character develops immensely as the play moves forward and the conflicts he comes in contact with are exciting to watch unfold.
The consequences of shirking accountability for ones actions are depicted through the tribulations John Proctor faced, in Arthur Miller's, The Crucible. Although John reluctantly became involved in the Salem witch trials, his initial silence proved to be the downfall of not only himself, but of his fellow townspeople as well. John Proctor remained silent for one reason, and that was to protect himself. As a result of his self-serving desires to avoid the consequences of his actions, innocent citizens were put to death.
The Puritan context in which John Proctor’s sin as well the wider sin of the Salem Witch Trials transpire, should be considered in order to understand the role of the figure of God and that of a putatively saintly, elect community in the formulation of his nihilism. Miller posits in the introduction of the first act of the play that the Puritan settlers of Massachusetts Bay Colony, convinced that they were the chosen ones by God, had established a stringently theocratic community which literally functioned in inextricable accordance with the Bible. Church and state were coupled and concurrently wielded the utmost type of ascendancy over the Puritan communities of the colony. In such a fervently religious environment, in this “New Jerusalem”,
People’s true character is revealed through their actions. Their morals and ethics can be told from how they choose to act in a situation. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; the character of John Proctor is an honorable man despite having committed wrongful acts. He was able to redeem himself through acts that is considered courageous, such as when he refuses to contribute to the lie of witchcraft in Salem, when he fights for the people who were convicted of witchcraft and when he regrets being a dishonest man.
John Proctor regrets of breaking his marriage vows, now his wife Elizabeth is being accused of witchcraft by Abigail Williams. Based on the statement by
