Excluded for having dark colored skin. Excluded for being a female. Excluded for liking to read. Imagine being treated as less than human just for being who you are. Often in life the act of oppression may not even be labeled as such; other times oppression may be experienced so severely and powerfully, that there may be no hope of stopping it. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, people are oppressed and treated unjustly for virtually anything they did that went against strict theocracy. Similarly in The Rock and The River by Kekla Magoon, an entire race of people were oppressed and treated worse than that of livestock, simply because they had a darker skin complexion. In both texts, the authors utilize oppression to reveal the effects that social cruelty and social mistreatment have on people.
In The Crucible, many townspeople of Salem Massachusetts, are subjected to unjust treatment and persecution for allegedly practicing witchcraft. The accused citizens are detained in prison, later to be tried for witchcraft in front …show more content…

During this time, the black community was being severely persecuted, and dominated by oppression, from the white community. The Civil Rights Movement had begun the start of the black community’s fight against racial segregation and discrimination, together with the revolution of the Black Panther Party, who had begun the fight for black rights. “ 4. We want decent housing, fit for shelter of human beings … 7. We want an immediate end to police brutality and the murder of black people” (Magoon 76).
