The Crucible “I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who its for or against” Malcolm X. This quotes shows that Governor Danforth, judge of the Salem witch-hunt trials, was for the truth and justice, or least he was. In the play, “The Crucible,” Arthur Miller demonstrates that Governor Danforth is the most responsible for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem by his illogical thinking, power-hungry, lust for authority, and his infatuation for pride. Danforth clearly shows that there are some illogical thinking from his view of witchcraft. “A person is either with the court or he must be counted against it, there be no road between” (Miller 94) to put in another way, this shows that Danforth is an extremist in politics and government. He set limits between the court and the people, holding back some opinions that could even be useful to the witchcraft trials. It is obvious that there are missing pieces to Danforths logic, which also holds him back from being a good judge, that puts him as the blame for the Salem tragedy. Danforth thinks that the trails are to deceiving to continue on to say who is guilty and who is not by an act of secular activities. It is important to realize here that, Danforth put a final demand on Giles Corey, when he comes to defend his wife, Martha Corey for the accuasation of being a witch. The point that is often overlooked is that, Danforth sarcastically, marked by bitterness and power, asked Corey whether he has the authority to make choices for the trail, putting Corey in silence understanding that he does not in fact have the authority, and that Danforth, the most dependent for justice but inappropriate actions due to his delusion and hypocritical mentality, alone has the most power in the Salem tragedy. Not only his lust for authority and power-hungry, but also his rigid persona puts him for the most blame on the Salem Witch Hunt. “While I speak God's law, I'll not crack its voice with whimpering" (Miller 129) with this in mind, it is important to see that Danforth is saying he is Gods voice on this earth and so he, Danforth, does not make any mistakes. This manifests that, Danforth is blind from the truth. Also, important to notice the irony here. Danforth wants the truth, but when he discovers the truth, his arrogance blinds him from it, therefore denying the actual truth and believing the fake truth, to keep him still in
