What is the relationship between the individual and the community? In a community, citizens try to build up the community by working together and share a common goal. The idea behind community building tries to persuade people into providing for their community and be actively apart in building one another up. The purpose of community building is for the community to share a common goal, like people sharing the same beliefs. By bringing forth our individual ideas, together we can build up the community. The text suggests that in a community, we fuel the tension by individual views clashing, people who care about what others think and not finding balance between our identity and the community’s collective identity. We desire to be accepted by all and we strive to do our part to build up the community. Unfortunately, we sometimes struggle to find a balance between our own identity and the community’s collective identity. We find ourselves in a situation where we feel we don't belong and we go against what the rest of community thinks like in novel, The Crucible. The novel describes a tight knit community where everyone believes in God and follows the church. The church is the center of the community and anyone who dares to defy the church is alienated. When people started to mention the idea of witchcraft, the community began to separate into two groups: people who believed and who didn’t believe in witchcraft. Many were falsely accused by their own neighbor and if they denied taking part in witchcraft they were pronounced guilty and sentenced to death. John Proctor tried to save the town from falling into shambles, but the whole town turned on him and he was hanged.
