SUMMARY The Crucible is set in the era of the witch trials that occurred in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. Numerous young girls claim to be possessed by witchcraft, the first victim started with Reverend Paris's daughter Betty. Reverend Parris, the town preacher, discovers his daughter Betty, niece Abigail, and many other girls dancing naked in the forest with his slave Tituba. The suspected girls accused people within the town of witchcraft, usually selecting targets who they or their families loathed. The main adversary Abigail Williams falls in love with a married farmer John Proctor. When Proctor expresses to Abigail his love had burned out for her, Abigail threatens to kill his wife, Elizabeth, and then blames Elizabeth of bewitching her. Proctor then comprehends that he has endangered his wife and eventually exposes his situation with Abigail, trying to clear his wife's name. Another character suspected of witchcraft is Martha Corey, wife of Giles Corey. As a result of refusing to identify the person who mentioned that the Putman’s were accusing the town people of witchcraft, Giles Corey paid the price and lost his life. In the beginning of the trials, Proctor plead guilty to witchcraft, but then alters his mind when he understood that he needs to keep his name unsoiled because it is the only truthful aspect he still has. Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse also plead not guilty to the accusations of witchcraft. Proctor, Martha Corey and Rebecca Nurse and …show more content…
Though there are some similarities, for example the book says that a group of adolescent girls claimed to have been bewitched by certain older women. This occurred in the film also; the young girls accused Tituba, the elderly slave of Reverend Parris, of practicing witchcraft. Several individuals were put to death before the Governor of Massachusetts put the trials to an end a year later.
The book I chose to read is The Crucible by Arthur Miller. The movie I am comparing the book too is the 2004 adaptation directed by Nicholas Hytner. The story is about the Salem witch trials and the controversy of the event. The film does tend to have some differences compared to the book. One of the big differences is that in the book, Abigail leaves Salem after John Proctor is placed in prison. But in the film adaptation, she visits John in prison. The director might have done this to show a stronger bond between Abigail and John, as they had an affair in the story.
In 1692, in Salem Massachusetts a small group of girls joined together to go in the woods at night to meet a slave woman name Tituba. Tituba is a slave of Reverend Parris. During their meeting all the girls are dancing
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a play that takes place in Salem Massachusetts in the 1600s, where a theocracy was in place at the time. The book is a fictional retelling of the Salem witch trials which took place during 1692 and 1693. The story follows a farmer named John Proctor who cheated on his wife with a young girl named Abigail Williams. John’s infidelity to his wife causes him to feel guilty about it throughout the events in the play. Another significant character in the book is Reverend Hale, who came from Beverly to Salem so that he could give his expertise on the topic of the witchcraft. When Reverend Hale arrived, he sparked the fear of witchcraft in the people of Salem. Once the trials began and the amount of people accused of witchcraft increased, Hale started to feel guilty because he was part of the reason why the trials started in the first place. In Act 4, the final act of the play, both Reverend Hale and John Proctor were trying to resolve their inner conflicts.
The play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller recounts the events from 1692 to 1693 in Salem, Massachusetts, otherwise known as the Salem Witch Trials. Though set in colonial Massachusetts, the somewhat fictional piece serves as an allegory for the post-WWII Red Scare, or more specifically the McCarthy Hearing in the 1950's. Both incidents of mass hysteria had taken place almost three centuries apart, however, share the tragic theme of innocent individuals being accused and convicted of crimes without evidence. As well as, how the prior can be caused by economic instability and provoked public fear. The same theme of human nature is portrayed as Abigail, a young woman desperately in love with the older John Proctor, uses the growing suspicion of witches in Salem to attempt to get rid of Proctor's wife, Elizabeth. Several other girls of Salem follow Abigail as she begins to test the limits of who she can successfully accuse of bewitching her, this goes on until she feels confident enough to accuse Elizabeth Proctor. In quest of her goal Abigail, as well as her followers, become blinded by their new power in society, to the point of abuse. This abuse includes the witch hysteria that erupted in Salem due to their finger-pointing of 'witches' and overdramatic acting of being bewitched in court. Later John Proctor, Mary Warren, Giles Corey, and Francis Nurse try to disprove the accuracy of Abigail's and the other girls' claims. Unfortunately, Mary Warren ends up turning on Proctor,
The Crucible is consisted of multiple daughters who go turning on people of their village of Salem to get all the attention off of them for their interactions with the devil. Many people become accused and are either sentenced to death or proven innocent that they had not been dealing with the devil. Some of the main characters are Danforth, Abigail, Parris, Proctor, Tituba, and Thomas Putman. People of this village are Puritans who believe witches are among them to make them do the wrong things in order to displease the Lord. For example, John Proctor cheats on his wife, who is very sick, with the young lady called Abigail. They have had strong feelings for one another, but if Proctor was to be caught committing adultery with this young woman he would be greatly punished for his actions. During Arthur Miller’s play, Miller demonstrates that it was Abigail Williams’ flaws – (lust, jealousy, and mendacity) led her to be responsible for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem.

In Act II, we see quite a bit going on, and it seems to be the climax of the story. We see Torvald belittle women once again when he says " is it to get about now that the new manager has changed his mind at his wife's bidding." We learn that Torvald expedited Krogstad's dismissal, and thus we see Nora acting really out of sorts as she tries harder and harder to maker sure Torvald never learns her secret- even going as far as to pretend she has no clue how to do the Tarantella to stop Torvald from reading the letter that Krogstad left. Finally, the Act leaves us with Nora stating "Thirty-One" hours to live- so us as readers are left wanting to know- is she going to commit suicide? Will Krogstad kill her? Or is it hypothetical- that she believes

Act 3 takes place in the church, which had been turned into a courtroom for the witch trials. Mary testified that they were only pretending to be afflicted by the witchcraft. Proctor was questioned about his religious beliefs. Judge Danforth arrested Giles for not giving him the name of the man who gave him information on the witchcraft, because he didn’t want to give away Putnam. Abigail was then sent on trial, and denied Mary’s testimony. The girls accused Mary of bewitching them with a cold wind and that she was responsible of the witchcraft. When Abigail accused Mary, Proctor called Abigail a whore and confessed his affair with her. He explained that Elizabeth fired her when she discovered it. He claimed that Abigail wanted Elizabeth to
One’s words have many meaning and can change shape by different people. Reputation is the beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something. Thomas Paine a famous English-American political activist, the philosopher born in 1774 best describes Reputation as, “what men and women think of us; character is what God and angels know of us.” Applying that one true identity lies beyond human vision but only truly seen by the god. This message is repeated in ‘The Crucible’ as many characters are challenged between telling the truth to risk their lives to keep their reputations rather than do the right thing. Whether it be, by lying about one’s action,
The desire to be seen as perfect is seen among every human. It has been taken up by the puritan community as the way of life. Puritan belief has made it tremendously hard to not throw shame and regret on people. It causes children to act up due to them being able to get recognized. Everyone would constantly be blamed for things that weren 't bad to the community but due to human nature, they were blamed for benefiting them. Which in itself is not the act of a true puritanism. Women ( specifically young girls) all had a huge impact on Salem that caused lies and new beliefs. 3 women were the main cause of all the sales madness and mayhem these women were Abigail

Scapegoating. According to Urban Dictionary, “a scapegoat is defined as, ‘A person or person or object that is used to lay the blame on for all that goes wrong, regardless of the contributions of others. This will usually carry on until the scapegoat has gone, or has managed to successfully defend itself against the arguments presented to it’".The pointing out of a person as an accused or a sinner happens because of the intolerance to any deviation from the society beliefs. This is seen in the play,The Crucible; articles Death Penalty Disgrace and A True Confession. In these articles, the main thing that stands out is that people can be
