The Lie That Changed Everything/ The Well Respected Name

She endangered her life to save the well respected name, Proctor. Elizabeth was sentenced to a year of jail time because of the lie she told in court about the affair. She does not want to be the one to confess John’s sins, she wants him to make that decision Elizabeth lied to Danforth about John having an affair with Abigail to save the family name in three ways. In Act 3 she tries to be one step ahead and think about the future; there kids,there name, there reputation. Elizabeth wants Proctor to choose his own fate. She does not want to be the one to decide what he does. As Elizabeth tells John “ Do what you will, but let none be your judge.” (Miller 137). She wants him to choose if he should keep the name Proctor well respected and tell the truth, or lie that he cheated on Elizabeth and stay alive while his children grow up. Proctor chose to keep the name Proctor well respected and tell the truth. He was hung for this decision. Proctor died a well respected and reliable man. This shows his honor and integrity.
