Reconstruction Essay “The battle was done, the buglers were silent. Boneweary and bloodied, the American people, North and South, now faced the staggering challenges of peace.” After the Civil War, no one knew what to do next. The terrible conditions of the South after the war made it so no one wanted to participate in such a situation. When President Abraham Lincoln held office, he knew that the Union must be reassembled while treating the blacks respectfully which began the period of Reconstruction. Throughout this period, four presidents held office each trying to reform the poor conditions of the United States. The amendment prevented voting restrictions due to race. Hiram Revels, a black senator, became the first out of sixteen blacks to be elected to Congress. This portion of Reconstruction succeeded for the most part, but something had to be done to stop the South from disobeying the laws. The Military Reconstruction Act of 1867 lasted for ten years and counted as another very large portion of the success of Reconstruction, even though flaws continuously occurred. “This drastic legislation divided the South into five military districts, each commanded by a Union general and policed by blue-clad soldiers, about twenty thousand all told.” The act enforced all laws passed by Congress including the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments. The tactics and maneuvers under this act called for strict rule over the South to insure the equality of blacks. In 1877, the federal troops had to abandon their positions in the southern states leaving the South in almost the same situation it faced previously. Therefore, the Military Reconstruction Act also failed for not keeping black equality rights enforced. Another example of the failure of Reconstruction involved the treacherous and immoral terrorist group founded in Tennessee in 1866, the Ku Klux Klan. This terrorist group consisted of besheeted horse riders who mainly rode through the night committing random acts of violence and terrorism against the blacks.
