In Southern China, “Pizza” who is also know as “the world’s saddest polar bear”, spends his life confined to a small display in a shopping mall. Every day he paces past the drawing of icebergs, sits below the artificial lights and spends his days by an air vent to sniff the outside world. This poor bear spends his entire life confined just for the mere entertainment of thousands of people. The fact that defenseless animals are nearly tortured for entertainment and profit is shameful and they must be freed. The space provided does not allow an animal to live freely causing detramental affects to their lives. it is our job to care for these animals becasue they cannot for themselves. Although many supporters of animal captivity may say that
This story Animal Farm by George Orwell is a novel about an animal revolution over an oppressive farmer. The irony in the story comes when the pigs turn into the very thing revolted against. They exhibit the same cruelty by treating the other animals the same or even worse than previous owners. This cycle of cruelty is shown in the Russian revolution by Joseph Stalin who is represented by Napoleon in the story. Cruelty in animal farm is shown by the human’s treatment of the animals, and the animal’s eventual treatment of each other and the ironic characteristics of the two.
The world stripped of human intervention was created by God to be a magnificent place, which glorified God. We, as beings made in the image of God, were given dominion over the earth. However, where does our rule become unjust? Where do we overstep our boundaries? Throughout history, humans have strived to gain ultimate control of a planet they did not create. Some aspects in nature should be left to its own devices to be beautiful and glorify God, their intended purpose of creation. Humans have no right to captivate orcas because we cannot provide for their needs and we force them into a world they did not want. We force orcas into tanks not nearly large enough, we force them to mix with orcas not from their social pods, and we force them to perform for our entertainment.
The author of this article, Michael D. Lemonick, discusses how some animals aren't able to be kept humanely in captivity. This article mainly focuses on elephants that are kept in captivity. Normally elephants roam up to, if not more than, 30 miles a day and they socialize with up to 20 other elephants a day. While in captivity, elephants are not experiencing their lives the way they should. If an elephant is in an exhibit that is too small for them, they can develop serious health issues such as, foot problems, arthritis, and even premature deaths. Most zoos aren't equipped to take care of elephants like they should. Lemonick discusses zoos across the country that have stopped exhibiting elephants altogether, due to severe issues seen in elephants.
The captivity of wild animals has been a highly debated topic for many years. Zoos and aquariums are huge attractions and can be found all over the world. Movies such as Black Fish and Unlocking the Cage showcase some of the troubling behaviors animals in captivity portray. Advocates for animal rights can use these movies to push their agenda and people who oppose these films say they are forms of propaganda. The fact of the matter is that it does not matter what side of the argument that you are on it cannot be denied that these moves spark mass discussion. The question can be asked are animals places on this earth for our amusement and entertainment or they here that we may cohabit with all aspects of life. Science has proven that some animals have shown signs of distress while being in captivity.
Fishing today has become a billion dollar industry as a sport all across America. In fact, it is such a popular hobby that across the central United States it is nearly unheard of to have never have participated in it at any point in one’s life. With world populations reaching never before seen levels, many engage in catch and release techniques. Though this activity is cherished by anglers across the nation, it may be a criminal involved in the case of animal cruelty. My three criteria for animal cruelty are: causing unnecessary pain to animals, killing without a use of the animal, and altering the entire ecosystem. If fishing by catch and release methods fall into this category, then they may not
“Imagine being abused by someone you trust and who is supposed to love you, and to make the situation worse, you can’t use your voice to cry out for help. Animals are like humans except they can’t tell people to stop.” Animal cruelty and abuse, a good website, said that. I think that is a big problem we need to fix. People hurting animals just because they can’t speak out for themselves. Some people take advantage of that. And it us up to humans to tell those people to stop.
The article put even more perspective on the topic of animal cruelty. I have previously read about the harsh conditions animals are forced into as well as I have watched torturous videos. I was captivated throughout the whole article, especially through the gruesome descriptions. I could sense that the author is a clear activist against the killing, slaughtering, and raping of innocent animals. It was disturbing reading about all of the specific details, mainly the ones that involve her experiencing first-hand what occurs in the factories. The conditions are brutal for not only the animals but the humans working. From the reading, nothing seemed sanitary. Humans being exposed to those conditions can easily disable their health, especially with
Cruelty to animals can either be the unintentional and the intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law. So much has happened recently that the US has broken it down into four categories, simple or gross neglect; intentional abuse and torture; organized abuse, including dogfighting and cockfighting; and animal sexual abuse (Fricker). The very first group of people in U.S. history to give laws for animal cruelty was the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Throughout the years North Carolina and several other U.S. states have increased of passed more laws on animal cruelty and abuse. Defining animal abuse and cruelty can be broken down into six different
Every year, wildlife animals are captured and are kept in captivity in zoos for entertainment. Zoos are unsuitable for animals to live in because the animals feel imprisoned and it affects their health and habits. Animals have their own right to live in the wildness, not in captivity. To many children and adults zoos are created for entertainment. Many people see zoos as a place that kpps animal in captivity. These wildlife animals are cramped in a small cage and are forced to live their rest of their lives inside this cage. Visiting a zoo, many people can tell that a lot of animals are depressed and stressed out. Animals kept captivity in zoos miss their families just as humans do. Animals wait for their day of freedom to come. Living in an
Imagine being taken away from your family and being thrown into a small glass cage to be overlooked by untrusted beings for the rest of your life. How would you feel? Angry? Scared? Annoyed? All of the animals in zoos feel like this. This shows that animals are not meant to be in zoos. They are not treated well and are only used for show and to make money.
In the last decade, the views and forms of animal cruelty have changed. Many people have different views of an animal’s rights or purpose. Some people believe that animals have no rights and are a piece of property to be utilized by humans. To others, animals can still be used by humans, but they have emotions as well. A few people consider that only certain animals with high intelligence like chimpanzees or monkeys, should not be used by man, and they should have all the rights that man has currently (“Animal Rights” , 2009). Domestic violence has a correlation with animal abuse. In a survey, 71% of domestic violence victims also reported that their abuser also targeted pets/animals. The most common animals who are abused are cats, dogs, horses,
All beings, “things”, and properties of life have a sole function and reason to be in existence. Everything must have an ends to itself rather than a means to another ends (Aristotle, 617-636). Aristotle examines the idea of function and purposefulness within the ten books of Nicomachean Ethics. Finding this ends to itself is how one can achieve the ultimate happiness. Aristotle discovers that if everything has an ends to itself, man too, must have an end. What does being a “person” really mean, and who is eligible to classify themselves as a “person”? How can one distinctively be told apart from an intellectual animal? Aristotle’s pinpointing the function and purpose of man, can directly relate to Mary Midgley’s article Persons and Non-Persons. Midgley’s article speaks about the issue of animal cruelty. The case of harming a dolphin and eventually becoming self-destructing is the main focus of the article. The researcher decided to set the dolphins free into the water, creating an even more dangerous environment for a lethargic, self-destructing dolphin. Both sources focus on the idea of the defining feature of man, and questions what is it that makes us human? Society is constantly abusing the idea of human superiority. Although humans have a distinctive feature, what gives one the right to be cruel to the other beings of the world, no matter what their function or their purpose in the world is? One must be careful not to abuse their power. One must use their practical and
Have you ever felt the feeling that you are trapped, mistreated, or a slave to society. In today’s world, millions of animals are feeling this way right now, a feeling no living creature can endure. Animals are living creatures whose sole purpose in life are to survive and thrive. Whose right is it to stop and change that for them. In captivity animals are treated badly, they have the potential to hurt humans, and they weren’t originally supposed to be in captivity in the first place. These beautiful creatures of Mother Earth should be cared for, not used as slaves.
Around 2.7 million of our companion animals are euthanized each year. It happens because many people are giving up their pets and not a lot of people are adopting pets. Due to the economic crisis few years ago, more owners threw away their pets to the streets, increasing the number of stray animals. Shelters have no more space for incoming animals, so they forced to euthanize some animals. The animals who are not euthanized are taken care by the shelters, but comes the next step, adoption. Since many pets have terrible past lives, they usually show bad behaviours, causing adopters to return pets. However this problem can be changed with good programs and people. These shelters take responsibility to protect and improve the lives of abused, abandoned, and homeless dogs and cats. They will also aim to bring together individuals who are passionate about creating a better future for our companion animals. This bill will save our companion animals whose lives are in peril by giving them rescue foster and adoption.
To test cosmetics, cleaners and other products, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded and killed every year. In circuses, animals are being tortured cruelly. This has been an argumentative issue for a long time. Some argue testing on some animals now will prevent lots of human suffering and save lives in the future. Others say it is unethical and cruel. Still, everyone agrees that millions of animals are subjected to unbearable pain in labs. Also most of people agree with animals tortured cruelly in circuses, they take it as an entertainment for themselves. And that thousands of them die. Before 1986, only four states had felony animal cruelty laws.
