The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night-time Mark Haddon uses Christopher Boone’s strengths and weaknesses throughout his novel to help solve of the murder mystery of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Christopher Boone is a fifteen year old child with autistic abilities who seeks information to solve the murder of his neighbor’s dog, Wellington. Boone uses his intelligence to help him push through his secret murder investigation. Even when his weaknesses get him into trouble, he continues to be dedicated to the situation and will set his mind to it to accomplish it. Though with autism, Boone is unable to understand the social norms of love, affection, and

Jeavons after Christopher learns of his mom’s secret affair. He ventures to math problems to keep him calm in this tough situation. Another strength is his organization in his thoughts and ideas. When Christopher sees three to five red cars in a row, he will talk to others and have a great day. If he sees four yellow cars in a row it makes it a “black day” which means he will not smile or talk to anyone (Haddon 25). The day after Wellington’s death, Christopher sees four red cars in a row and decides he will not be sad about his death. “We passed four red cars in a row, which meant that it was a Good Day, so I decided not to be sad about Wellington’s death” (Haddon 24). Though his thoughts are not logical, it does keep him calm in corrupt situations. Another strength is his memory. Christopher tends to remember good situations, but also cannot let go of bad ones. His memory of Wellington’s murder allows him to solve it in the end. Though Christopher Boone has strengths, he also carries weaknesses such as his autism (Haddon 82). Christopher is a very intelligent kid, but he struggles with a variety of thing because of his autism. Autism is a mental condition causing one to lack in communication skills and relationship formation. His autism causes him to not understand the normality of situations such as love, help, or sarcasm. Though Christopher does not directly state he has autism, readers can assume based on the descriptive detail of
What makes fiction novels especially interesting are the larger messages hidden within them. The novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon does just that. The novel centers around a 15 year old genius Christopher Boone who has a mental disability of some sort, struggling with communication because of it. The book is comprised of a murder mystery novel Christopher sought to write after discovering the bloody murder of his neighbor's dog, Wellington. Gradually, the story focuses away from the main conflict and morphs into a complicated story about Christopher’s life. With that, Haddon brings out the complexity and hardships of human life, specifically through the topic of truth and deceit. The truth comes out eventually; fabricating it now will only prolong the unwanted effects later. Also, lies ruin relationships, possibly for good.
When Christopher runs away from his father, and decides to go on a train to London to his mother, or when he finds out who killed Wellington the dog, he begins to do things he does not do regularly which shows how he becomes independent, as he states, “And I know I can do this because I went to London on my own, and because I solved the mystery of Who Killed Wellington? and I found my mother and I was brave and I wrote a book and that means I can do anything” (Haddon, 221). This quote demonstrates how he overcomes various challenges, gains confidence in his abilities and becomes more self-sufficient. Also, Christopher passing an A level math test, and having the desire to take more A level math and physics classes and pass them represents how he wants “to go to university in another town” and “get a First Class Honours degree and… become a scientist” (Haddon, 220-221), which shows how doing well on the tests and going to university allows him to be able to live on his own in the future and become more independent.
Temple Grandin’s TED talk and the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, have several similarities between the two. In the TED talk, Temple explains the way children with autism think, process, and react differently from those who are not autistic. Grandin announced to the crowd of the TED talk convention that those with autism tend to be sensitive to sound- just as Christopher was in the novel. There were several occurrences when Christopher’s surroundings became too much to handle- which is why “[he] walked at the edge of the road. And [he] didn’t like all the people being near [him] and all the noise because it was too much information in [his] head”(The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time 139). She also
In the story “The curious incident of the dog in the night-time” Christopher and his father have a rocky relationship. However, despite his temper Mr.Boone still loves Christopher. This is proven in the story because, Mr.Boone always cater’s to Christopher’s needs, puts up with his mistakes, and always worries about him.
Autism spectrum disorder called Asperger syndrome is a complex disorder of the brain development. This makes it difficult for him to understand social norms like body language and other forms of human interaction. He’s really good at maths and knows all prime numbers and more logic-based skills (like writing daily schedules or drawing maps of places). Some of the general examples of signs and symptoms are that he can’t really approach others, unusual body language, facial expressions, difficulty understanding other people’s feelings and repeating words. The examples of Christopher signs are that he repeats his words, doesn’t like crowds of people or in places with lots of people, doesn’t understand jokes, difficulty understanding things and doesn’t understand lies.
Christopher may seem to be the brightest kid on the block, but even he has his own struggles that he must
The mind of an autistic person is fascinating and frightening because usually their actions can’t accurately express what their brain is thinking. It is frustrating to try and determine what a child with autism is trying to say, and often results in them being misunderstood. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon, tells the story from the perspective of Christopher Boone, a fifteen year old boy with autism. Chris is brilliant at math and science, but is unable to understand or express emotion. His difficult home life further contributes to his illness; he doesn’t have anyone at home who supports him and tries to help him. His teacher, Siobhan, is his only friend and the only person who tries to help him learn to
When put into situations that are new, Christopher tries to think his way through the variety of options he has before acting. Christopher finds himself alone in a train station with a swarm of people he does not know. Chris sat down in the station for hours trying to devise a plan of how to get to London in the most structured way possible. When Chris isolates himself from the environment around him he thinks of ways to fix and maintain the order in his life. It’s like he takes a special time out to sort his thoughts and create a new
Thesis Statement: When I watch superhero movies, I only think of male superheroes, as there are many of them. But then again there is Wonder Woman, Cat Woman and Black Widow, who are heroes and are also women. We usually forget about them being heroes. Which makes me acknowledge the reasons of what makes a hero a hero. Argument 1 The attribute of independence can identify both men and women. Argument 2 Also, the courage can define the hero rather than the gender. Thesis Heroism is not outlined Heroism is not outlined by gender, but rather by independence and courage.
Throughout the novel, “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” author Mark Haddon explores how several different perspectives are presented. This is apparent through the use of various techniques. One technique is the use of first person narrative perspective. Another technique is the change in narration through the use of letters sent to the protagonist from his mother. Finally, the use of maps, diagrams and mathematical problems also assist in showing these perspectives.
In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time the main character, Christopher, changes throughout the entire story. In the beginning of the book Christopher didn’t trust strangers, had a very low self-esteem, and didn’t have a great desire for independence. Although Christopher had a strong connection to animals and numbers, he wasn’t able to associate well with other human beings. Towards the end Christopher was more lenient and was more open to the idea of letting people in, instead of blocking them . For example, Christopher granted his mother permission back into his world, even after she had an affair and ran away. Christopher also allowed his father to gain back their relationship, even though his father
Chaos and order are an inherent part of life. Discuss in relation to the novel The Curious incident of a dog in the night time and The Blas Balloon.
In Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Christopher Boone the protagonist has suggested that he is very similar to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Character, Sherlock Holmes.
Although this would have been the same in third person, we wouldn’t be able to interpret Christopher’s reactions as well. When he was told he was shocked that his mother deceived him and just wanted to go home. In the following chapter, which is one that diverges from the main plot, the line “And what he meant was that maths wasn't like life because in life there are no straightforward answers at the end” relates to the previous chapter because of the unpredicted events Christopher just faced. Lastly, in chapter 167 Christopher’s father confesses to killing Wellington after apologizing for lying about his mother because he doesn't want any more secrets. In third person we would see he is clearly outraged at his father. In first person we get more in-depth into his feelings, we learn how he rationales that his father is going to kill him next which lead to the final chapters in the book. In third person we could have foreseen these events but through Christopher’s logical mind we get lost in following his more in depth, unpredicted, and emotional path to the answer.
Throughout the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon, emotions are the most challenging problems of all for Christopher. However, beyond the drama of Christopher’s crises involving feeling, or interaction with other people, we glimpse a more general idea – that dealing with people and feelings is difficult.
