In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, by Mark Haddon, the main character, Christopher, compares himself to Sherlock Holmes in a way that tells the reader that he has high self-esteem. This is first apparent when he says, “Sherlock Holmes...is the kind of detective I would be. He is very intelligent” (73). By stating that he would be like Holmes because he is intelligent, Christopher is indirectly saying that he believes himself to be just as intelligent. Christopher also believes himself to be more observant than others like Holmes who knows that “‘The world is full of obvious things which nobody...observes.’ But he notices them, like [Christopher does]”, which means that he does not overlook what so many others do (73).
