This capstone project investigates the current academic thinking on cross-layer design approaches used to improve the quality of video steaming in wireless networks. Various kinds of wireless networks emerged due to innovations in technologies and wireless devices. Such networks are expected to render video applications as well. This ability of mobile devices caused research interest in video streaming applications in wireless networks. In this context, the existing cross-layer designs are studied and research gaps are identified. Then a new CLD is designed and implemented. Two layers are considered such as physical and MAC layers in order to jointly optimize performncae of network for rendering video streaming applications. The implementation is done using NS2 simulations. Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) has been around for many decades as reference model for networking. The model has seven layers such as application, session, presentation, transport, network, data link and physical layers. The physical layer is meant for binary transmission. Data link layer is for access to media. Network layer is for address and best path. Transport layer is for end-to-end connections. Session layer is meant for inter-host communication. Presentation layer is for data representation while the application layer is for network process to applications. Various networks came into existence to support communications in different contexts.
