The current music industry is a hard business for all musicians, whether they are a new artist or even a popular radio artist. Modern times have radically changed the way that musicians now make money. Past musicians used to be able to make a living simply by selling their music and playing a few major concerts to survive and even lives some luxurious lives and not really have to focus on anything except the art that they were creating. The music industry has transformed from being an art to becoming a challenging business job for anyone involved. Today, most musicians have to also be able to handle managerial business to get anywhere and make money or find someone to help them. This is where a record label comes into play.
For new bands, one of their first major steps into getting into the business is usually finding a record label. A record label is commonly known by most people as someone who simply signs a band and sells their music. What most people do not know is that they do much more than that. A label does do all the things that people believe they do, however, they also do much more to help an artist. A label is one band’s contact to other artists or promotors that will help further their popularity and reach out to more businesses who could potentially seek endorsement deals to support an artist while also advertising their own product (Lindvall). However, some bands have had negative experiences with labels. There are many negative outlooks on record labels recently and their work with certain artists. The first problem is the royalty fees made with labels. An artist’s album can cost anything from $15,000 to $200,000 (Recording Connection) and the artist is often left in debt after which is slowly paid back through the sales of their own records which only leaves them a fraction of what the original product was sold for. Another major problem with most major record labels is that their sole reason to get artists is to further their own profit. Most major labels put business before art,
