The current value that America holds on to the closest is individualism. According to a study conducted by Pew Global, “nearly six-in-ten (58%) Americans believe it is more important for everyone to be free to pursue their life’s goals without interference from the state” (“The American-Western European”, 21). This number is quite high compared to other countries, such as Britain with 38% and Germany with 26%, and attributes to our nation’s ideology. America was founded to be independent and free from a controlling monarchy. The first settlers left Britain due to a lack of freedom to practice their ideals that were not considered “acceptable” and were often persecuted for their religious beliefs. In fact, before same-sex marriage rights were put in place all over America, many of the people in the LGBTQ community were quite suicidal with a rate of “28.5 percent, a shockingly high figure” (Williams, 11). People looked down upon them for not following social norms and were often mistreated. However, according to a study published by JAMA Pediatrics, after same-sex marriage was legalized, the amount of suicidal teens within the community “dropped by 14%” (Williams, 13). Would such a drop have come if people did not allow individuals to embrace their inner beliefs? I think not. And frankly, I agree with the ideals that the American society has believed in for the last 241 years. I say that society should value individuality. Individualism is defined as “a social theory favoring freedom of action for individuals over collective or state control.” The definition I agree with the most is Craig Biddle 's interpretation of "Individualism." He defines the value as the “idea that the individual’s life belongs to him and that he has a right to live it as he sees fit, to act on his own judgment, to keep and use the product of his effort, and to pursue the values of his choosing” (Biddle, 2). It is with this value that America was born and continues to grow with as a country. This ideal is why our country is the heart of technology and innovation.
