The Curriculum And The Montessori Curriculum

School education is taught through a wide variety of methods; there are nature, project, individualized, and even teacher-centered curriculums. While each curriculum has the same basic goal of educating children, the execution of that goal can vary drastically. The Waldorf curriculum and the Montessori curriculum and two different, yet similar types of schooling. To begin, the Waldorf curriculum started in 1919 when an Austrian philosopher, scientist and artist named Rudolf Steiner was asked to open a school for a factories employees children. Steiner agreed to this but insisted that the school be open to the public, have a unified twelve-year school, be co-educational and have minimal government involvement. Like most classrooms, Waldorf and Montessori classrooms have defined spaces in the classroom for different subjects of work such as, language arts, math, arts, etcetera. The main design focus of the classrooms are to help the children develop independence and discover their learning interests, while feeling comfortable and welcomed. Another very similar component between the two types of schooling is the way the children learn. In Montessori schooling, as well as in Waldorf schooling, the curriculum is very student-directed rather than teacher-directed like many public school classrooms. Referring back to the discussion about the classroom organization, the classroom is set up with materials that are inviting and easily accessible for the students to explore. This often allows for students to choose which materials they want to explore and learn from, opposed to having the teacher assign the materials students can use. The classroom design alone gives evidence that both curriculums are student-centered. Though both can be considered extremely student-centered, Waldorf schools become slightly more teacher-driven in older elementary grades, during the formal teachings of mathematics, science, history and social studies. With that being said, the formal teachings of these subjects aren’t introduced until later into school, and they are only occasionally taught in a teacher-centered way; these subjects are typically taught through stories,
