How can we speak up for the lives of innocent creatures:
More than 48% of all animals are abused every year. “Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats”(Pet Statistics) Although dogs are considered a “man's best friend” some do not always see animals in that way. Animal abuse is an ongoing issue all over the world. 48% of all animals are abused in the U.S. Animal abuse is portrayed in many ways. A cat claws the carpet and it is thrown outside. A dog makes a mess and it is kicked.“There are two main types of abuse. The first type of animal abuse is passive which can be defined as neglect or failing to take care of an animal and keep it in good health and well-being” (Problems). Pets are mistreated if they are disobedient.
There are different kinds of abuse so it is best to know how to detect the different kinds of abuse. Direct harm to an animal is obvious, if the animal is acting scared towards humans and has physical symptoms of violence then more than likely the animal has been abused. The other thing to look out for is neglect. This could be multiple things as far as not taking care of an animal. A few examples are, malnourishment, untreated injuries, poor living conditions and so on. “So what do you do if you notice an animal that appears to be suffering from one or more of these issues? Call your local animal welfare agency immediately” (Cesars Way). If any animals are seen neglected contact the
Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
Everyday, every second that passes by, animals across the globe are mistreated in their so-called “home”. Stop animal abuse! Abusers of animal are five times as likely to harm humans. Nearly half of the time victims who stay in violent households do so because they are afraid for their own animals. Countless more never leave the home for their very reason. This issue should be further looked into by identifying states with poorly laws against animal abuse, the wrong doing of taking advantage in the use of human resources, and having absolutely no heart in having a friendly companion.
Over the centuries, animals have suffered from cruelty from humans. In the United States, animals are beaten, neglected, or forced to struggle for survival. Animals have been inflicted with pain from humans for reasons other than self-defense. They have been slaughtered for their food and fur for personal gain in profit. In a majority of cases they have even been abused for someone’s own personal amusement or out of rage filled impulses. In some cases animals are found and rescued. They are given the second chance in life to experience what life should be like compared to what they once had.
Animal abuse awareness is very important because it is showing that harm to an animal is not okay, it is a crime, and should not be taken lightly. Animals feel too, “dogs don’t hide what they feel” ( Marc Bekoff, The Emotional
Have you ever witnessed in your life a helpless animal crying is distress from their owner’s cruel actions inflicted upon it? Believe it or not various types of animals are found to be victims of numerous cases of severe Animal Abuse caused by humans worldwide. Animal Abuse is categorized in two different forms of abuse which includes: the intentional and physical trauma inflicted upon the animal such as depriving an animal from food and water, striking an animal out of unnecessary violence, hoarding, and inadequate living environments. The second form of Animal Abuse would be labeled as abuse being unintentional such as animal neglect. Many might dismiss Animal Abuse as a minor issue in our world, however as a fellow pet-owner, Federal laws should be enforced and established to protect the welfare of all animals throughout the globe because animals are not classified as property, and have the same rights as humans.
“It is quite clear that in abusing animals we abuse our relationship with animals, and that we abuse ourselves. We become less human to the extent that we treat any living beings as things” (R.D. Laing). There is a very evident connection between animal cruelty and cruelty to other humans. In studies conducted between 1983 and 2004, 60% of children who met the criteria for child abuse/neglect had families that were cruel to their pets. In 88%
Children who live in homes where animal abuse is present are often abused themselves and unfortunately, sometimes carry on with the cycle of abuse later on in life. “More than 80 percent of family members being treated for child abuse also had abused animals. In one-third of the cases, a child victim continued the cycle of violence by abusing a pet (“The animal abuse home violence connection”, 2013).”
The realization of a link between domestic violence and the abuse of animals and children is not a revolutionary finding, as this relationship has been observed for many years (DeGue & DiLillo, 2009). In fact, their legislative histories are intertwined as our country’s statutes regarding child abuse and neglect were championed from animal abuse regulations (Becker & French, 2004). The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Each year, the most extreme cases of animal abuse receive media attention. Yet, the animal cruelty problem is more widespread than is reported in the media. Animal abuse and neglect is a nationwide issue, affecting thousands of animals nationwide. Cruelty to animals is defined as the infliction of physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, beyond what is necessary. There is a need to stop abusers from acting in such a horrific manner–preventing the neglect and suffering of the animals. What causes animal abusers to act in such a cruel way towards animals? How are cases of animal abuse being managed, and how should cases be handled? Finally, does the status of animals in society contribute to the rate of their abuse?
Three out of five households in America own a pet. Now imagine one of those poor little puppies or kittens getting beaten, malnourished, or even getting trained to fight. Animal abuse is a serious crime. Regardless if it is a domestic animal or not, it should get treated like one. Animal abuse occurs everywhere and people do it because they are not scared of the punishment for doing it. Studies have shown that people that abuse animals are more likely to harm or kill people. Something should be done about this serious issue in society. In order to reduce the amount of animal abuse, law makers should increase punishments for abusing animals.
Animal Abuse is a widespread subject people hear about all the time but never think twice as if it relates to violence in the home as well. Researchers have documented case studies proving the direct relationship between domestic violence and abuse of animals. In a Wisconsin study, it showed that 68 percent of women who had lived with abusive partners, the pets were also abused. The ethic of caring for animals also applies to the same ethic of caring for your own. The psychological link is the abuser trying to ensure control and enforce submission of the family whilst creating a fearful environment for both the animal and the victims. A case study in Texas proved batterers who also abused pets had
I will also present interactive or stated questions about the topic on a personal level to see where the audience stands on the topic at hand. I will also demonstrate and present the consequences on what animal abuse and neglect looks like in the perspective on how the animals feel. Sometimes we do not take into consideration the way in which the animal feels because we do not think it has much value but animas have been a sacrificial sacrifice back in ancient times. However, that doesn’t make it right when we decide to abuse, neglect, or mistreat any animal we come into contact with. I hope with my knowledge and support from outside resources I present to you that you can be convinced as to why animal abuse and neglect can be prevented so that the animal can in fact live in a healthy and substantial
In the last decade, the views and forms of animal cruelty have changed. Many people have different views of an animal’s rights or purpose. Some people believe that animals have no rights and are a piece of property to be utilized by humans. To others, animals can still be used by humans, but they have emotions as well. A few people consider that only certain animals with high intelligence like chimpanzees or monkeys, should not be used by man, and they should have all the rights that man has currently (“Animal Rights” , 2009). Domestic violence has a correlation with animal abuse. In a survey, 71% of domestic violence victims also reported that their abuser also targeted pets/animals. The most common animals who are abused are cats, dogs, horses,
Animal cruelty is a rapidly growing nationwide problem. Animals are being hurt and starved everyday. Acts of violence towards animals, animal neglect and even psychological harm are forms of animal cruelty. If you check the webpage of RSPCA Australia (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), you will find a list of actions and conditions that can be qualified as cruelty to animals. The list includes such points as torturing or beating an animal; failing to provide it with food and appropriate treatment in case of disease or injury; killing an animal in an inhumane manner; failing to provide appropriate transportation conditions, and so on. According to statistics, animals who suffer from cruelty most often are dogs (64.5%) and cats (18%). 25% are for other animals, such as horses (The Humane Society). Supposedly, it means domestic pets are the most vulnerable category to suffer from cruelty; also, it might mean cruelty towards animals is a result of pet owners demonstrating their anger, frustration, or stress on the closest and most defenseless creatures. Greyhound racing, puppy farms and animal testing are three major examples of animal cruelty. Thousands of animals are being mistreated in Australia
Animal abuse is a global issue most people are inclined to ignore. We don’t wonder of its origin or of its consequences, and surely don't relate it to domestic violence at home. However, psychological researchers have recently documented case studies, that in fact show a relationship between domestic violence and the abuse of animals. Researchers questioned a load of battered women as to what extent would you go to protect your pets? Statistically, a quarter to about half of abuse victims are unable to escape abusive situations because they worry about what will happen to their pets once they leave. Research indicates that intentional cruelty on animals correlates back to not only domestic abuse but also other crimes as well social or mental health dilemmas.
