Today in American society, most of the general public does not know enough about genetically modified foods and needs to be informed on them more. Genetically modified foods, also known as “GM foods”, “GMOs”, or “GM crops”, are foods produced from organisms that have changes in their DNA to introduce a new trait that is beneficial to the consumer, organism, or environment. These changes can include the introduction of beta-carotene, which is a chemical compound related to vitamin A, the introduction of the trait of being able to have an increase tolerance in herbicides, being able to resist certain diseases, and many more valuable traits and abilities. Most people in today’s society are opposed to this scientific innovation because of the fear they have for its potential so called dangers. However. if people were educated more on these types of foods, they would be less afraid and more welcoming of them. The dangers that opposers are worried about are merely concerns and should not influence one’s initial opinion on genetically modified foods and their helpful features. Because of their potential health benefits, environmental benefits, and ability to improve agriculture, genetically modified foods should be accepted by society. GMOs have the potential to possess various health benefits that are vital to humans. An example would be golden rice, which is rice that has been genetically modified to contain beta-carotene. John Pearson, author of “Point: The Many Benefits of Genetically Modified Foods”, notes, “The rice contains beta-carotene, which the human body converts to Vitamin-A. In the poorest areas of Asia, Vitamin-A deficiency is related to death or blindness…” (Pearson). The more people are well informed about the science behind these foods, the more they will be convinced to support them. GMOs are a blessing to humanity because of their unique qualities. I encourage you to support the use of GMOs and help society not be afraid of accepting them. If you support the use of GMOs, then I urge you to get involved and contact pro-GMO groups that support GMOs (such as March Against Myths About Modification) and help them get the word out to locals and convince them to support this scientific
