Social Media is dangerous. Predators uses websites like social network, sexting, online gaming and chat rooms to harass and can lead to many dangerous situations. Many students send inappropriate pictures, videos of themselves to their friends and they send it to other friends. Anonymous people can see these pictures and send hurtful messages to teenagers. It could harm teenagers because students in school begins to call names and bully them which increases students to commit suicide.
Suicide is common towards teenagers due to being harassed, humiliated, threatened from ages 10-18. Teenagers have access to everything on their computer and smartphones at home like Facebook, myspace, twitter. Teens are often harassed by friends or classmates. Classmates spread rumors to other to make the victim feel embarrassed and lie. They use the websites talk to with anonymous people online. These people can lie about their age, where they live and what they look like.
In fact a student who ended their life such an early age named “Phoebe Prince hanged herself, she was a new student at South Hadley High School in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Phoebe's school reportedly called her an "Irish slut," a "whore" and a "bitch," viciously harassing her in person and on Facebook” (Holladay 1). Insulting teens can cause them to have disorders for example depression or eating disorder makes teens think about committing suicide. Schools have the right to punish a student that harasses another
Social media itself is a huge danger to society. It causes many suicides within the world because of the cyberbullying and spreading of rumors. “Recent studies have shown that one out of four teens have been the victims of cyberbullying and one out of six have admitted to having cyberbullied someone” (Trautner 1). The internet and social media is supposed to be used to communicate with friends and for searching information, “Kids use technology different than their parents do. Sometimes it is hard for adults to understand that this can even be a possibility” (Trautner 1). It is not supposed to be used to bully someone, especially not to the point where the victim would think about suicide. “One of the statistics that has been highlighted within this news coverage is the threefold increase in the suicide rate for girls ages 10 to 14. The rates for girls in this age group increased from 0.5 to 1.5 per 100,000 during this time period. The increases for boys in this age group were not as high, climbing from 1.9 per 100,000 during 1999 to 2.6 per 100,000 in 2014” (Olsen
Adolescents are still trying to discover what type of person they are or want to be. Leaving them more vulnerable to the opinion of others due to the fact they put the values they were once taught aside. According to Steven L. Brewer. Jr., “youth suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds worldwide (World Health Organization, 2016).” Jessica Laney a 16-year-old Floridian committed suicide after being the victim of cyberbullying. She received hateful messages on the website Ask.fm saying, “Can you kill yourself already?” or “Nobody even cares about you.” Then shortly afterwards was found dead at her house. She was also having family problems, she did not talk to her brother anymore, claimed
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.
Many people think that a lot has been done to prevent youth suicide. 2,415 teenagers have been committing suicide per year in the last 5 years (Hunter Institute of Mental Health, 2014). Most of them have done that due to psychological issues. Furthermore, bullying is also one of the causes that we should be focused on. In addition, technological developments make it easier for teenager to get bullied through the Internet and social media. I think people should be concerned about youth suicide rather than physical health only because it could be a silent killer to this generation. I don’t think that people have done enough to prevent youth suicide.
A teenager may commit suicide for different reasons, but two common reasons for people to kill themselves are depression and bullying. Depression is commonly a thing which happens as a result of mental disorders such as Bipolar. Mostly people who commit suicide have a disorder of some kind. Pappas mentions this in her article as well. In it Pappas states, “The vast majority of people who do kill themselves have a mental illness. More than 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a mental disorder, either depression, bipolar disorder or some other diagnosis,
Research has discovered that suicide and mental health issues can occur in children and teenagers thanks to technology, stress, and lack of support. An article from the Huffington Post by Stephanie
According to the CDC, suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth between the ages of 10 and 24. It results in approximately 4,400 deaths each year (Get the Facts). Most teens are bullied because of looks, body shape, and race. These things cause many issues, including; suicide, self harm, and even depression. Teenage bullying is a very common issue in the US. There are many types of bullying, including; cyber, physical, verbal, and so many more. It can cause so many issues and affect many people.
A lot of teens commit suicide due to bullying because it makes them feel unwanted and lonely. When everyone is picking on them they feel like they have no friends, and no one to turn to or talk to. Also kids and high school tend not think long term and don’t look at the bigger picture. An example of this in Hamlet is when Ophelia drowns herself in the river because she thinks Hamlet doesn’t want her and that he doesn’t love her. Another example although its not in hamlet a transgender teen in Texas committed suicide because she was bullied every day at school and hated going to school as a result of that. Eventually she committed suicide because it had gotten so bad. Also, now with social media being as popular as it is almost everyone has a twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. so that could allow people to harass them on there or commit
“Statistics reveal that in the US approximately...nearly one million people attempt suicide each year” ("Suicide Risk Among Abused Children."). Suicide is not an act of randomness. It is a result of prolonged feelings and/ or events, which push that person to extremes they desperately want out of. Suicide rates are amongst the highest in teens, due to their lack of support systems. During these years many are trying to find-out who they are and fit in, thus many get accepted into some people’s views, but there are also a good number that get ignored and feel like they do not belong anywhere. Teen suicide can be a result of a home-life of abuse or mistreatment, psychological disorders, and lack of social support-bullying; however, through the education on the warning signs of suicide, providing more emotional outlets at schools, and creating safer environments the number of annual victims can be decreased.
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide and almost 7 percent have attempted it. That at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk for suicide, according to the study above According to statistics reported by ABC News nearly 30 percent of students are either bullies or victims of bullying
Suicide is the third leading cause of deaths in adolescents in the United States. Teen suicide is also often referred to as a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Teens so often are suicidal and attempt suicide as a call for help from others. They have no intention in dying they are just trying to cry out for help from anyone that will listen. Many reasons cause teen to attempt suicide, varying from bullying to psychological disorders. In fact, psychological disorders accounts for about 90% of teens who attempt or commit suicide. Teenagers are also at higher risk of suicide when they are under
Suicide and the reasons why they happen is something not many people talk about. According to American Psychiatric Association, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between eleven and eighteen years of age and the suicide rate is highest for those who suffer from depression, substance abuse or other mental disorders. But I would have to argue this, I believe that teen suicide has increased over the years because of bullying, parent divorces and depression.
To begin with, suicide is common among many young adolescents. Those who seek suicide view it as an option to end the pain they are dealing with. Friends that do not understand the issue can worsen the situation and the teenager feels even more isolated. Adolescents are more prone to suicide when they have little to no relationship to members of society. Social groups as school that exclude a teenager, cause him to feel isolated and unwanted, which lead to self-harm. Those that feel isolated withdraw from society and activities that once made them happy. Non-communication with friends can lead an adolescent to feel as though he is a burden or are not worth having friends. If this occurs, it can
Despite the positives, there are many negatives associated with social media. Using social media can make a person more vulnerable to predators and cyber bullying. In this age, “Cyber bulling is quite common, can occur to any young person online, and can cause profound psychosocial outcomes including depression, anxiety, severe isolation, and tragically suicide” (“American Academy of Pediatrics”). Cyber bullying impacts society in a negative way because it is harming young teenagers’ minds. Bullies, torment, threat, harass, and even embarrass their victims by using different forms of social media. Using social media can also decrease privacy for an individual. People often give out their personal information not knowing who can see it. To average internet users, “A false sense of security may leave social networking site users vulnerable to security attacks such as hacking, leaking sensitive information, and sending viruses” (“ProCon”). Furthermore, Social media can also lead to brain disorders and can cause people to have a hard time interacting with people face to face. “Social networking entices people to spend more time online and less time talking to a person face to face.” (“ProCon”)
The Center for Disease Control states that suicide is accountable for nearly 4,400 teen deaths each year. Suicide is ranked 3rd overall cause of death, for young people in America today. Plus, for every successful suicide there is 100 attempts made, and there are also the ones that are not reported. The age group this seems to hit the most are those that are ages 10-14 years and ages 15-24 years old suicide is ranked 2nd cause of death and with actual homicides rank 3rd. They are more likely to commit suicide because they have yet to find their place in the world and they have someone telling them that they don’t have a place here or the place is bad for whatever reason. ("Bullying and Suicide Statistics in US, Australia and New Zealand," 2017). As detailed by a study done by Yale University, victims of bullying are 2-9 times more likely to contemplate suicide than non-victims of bulling. Girls that are between the ages of 10 and 14 years old seem to have a higher risk to commit suicide, this age group has a great need of fitting in with this right group of people, and when they don’t they feel like their lives are not complete or over. When you also factor cyberbullying in the odds are stacked against them having any kind of healthy self-esteem. As parents, teachers, and even best friends we need to look for the signs that someone could possibly have suicidal tendencies, suddenly seeing them withdraw from things you know they like to do,
