The book starts with the students, Harry, Ron, and, Hermione going back to Hogwarts after summer vacation. Voldemort is free and is wreaking havoc throughout the wizarding world. Dumbledore has a plan but first he must inform Harry of Voldemort’s past. Throughout the story the trio finds out who the half-blood prince is and discover ways to defeat Voldemort. His soul is connected to his horcruxes. By destroying Voldemort’s Horcruxes they are destroying parts of his soul, which is the only way to defeat him. Harry believes that Snape is working for Voldemort, but no one believes him.

Each book is a year at Hogwarts that Harry goes through with his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. After Dobby ruined Uncle Vernon’s meeting Harry was blamed for the mishap. Harry was locked in his room and his windows were barred, so he could not get back to Hogwarts, however Harry would discover a way out sooner than he thought. Ron, Harry’s best friend, came to save him from his nasty aunt and uncle. They successfully got Harry’s school supplies into the car, until they forget Harry’s owl Hedwig. To clue them in Hedwig screeched, nevertheless waking Uncle Vernon, who then went into Harry’s room. As Harry was getting in the car, Uncle Vernon burst into his room and tried to stop him, but they got away. As Harry was flying away he realized he was in a car that was up in the sky. They drove this flying car all the way to Ron’s house

Now that Harry has become labeled as an outcast by his classmates, he really does not enjoy being at Hogwarts, the wizarding school. While Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Harry 's other friend, see the attacks as being done by another person or monster, the rest of the school sees Harry as the attacker. Later on when Harry and his friends try to confront Hagrid about all of the attacks, they see the Headmaster of the school, and the head of the wizarding government speak to Hagrid. The Headmaster comes to defend Hagrid in the eyes of the Minister of Magic, or head governing official., who has decided that Hagrid is responsible for the attacks. The Headmaster, Dumbledore, seems to know that Hagrid is innocent, yet because of the same event occurring 50 years in the past, the Minister is positive that it was Hagrid. The Minister seems unfair against Hagrid, because of the blame placed on Hagrid in the past. Dumbledore tries to reason with the Minister, but with no luck. With Hagrid 's arrest, Hagrid secretly tells Harry and Ron to follow the spiders. The boys take Hagrid 's advice and end up in the lair
