She doesn’t do something about the situation at hand except run screaming in her night gown at night instead of ‘getting some religion’ like what Miss Daya told her to do. In ‘The Man Of The House’ the young boy does something about the fact that his mother may be sick with pneumonia. In contrast, he also listening to the knowledge of someone older than him, Miss Minnie Ryan, when she advises him to get his mother some whiskey mixed with lemon, though scared on reaching the public house, determined to cure his mom, he overcomes his fear and gets the whisky. Unlike the other speaker in ‘The Day The World Almost Came To An End’ who just embraces her fear and does absolutely nothing about it. Lastly, what is also contrasting are their ages. Though they are both children in the same age range, one would think that because the girl in ‘The Day The World Almost Came to An End’ is two years older than the other narrator that she would have the tinniest bit more sense than he, but this is in the end seen as futile since she acts like a mad woman in the end running out of her house in the night gown just because she heard a sound.
The experiences of these two speakers are contrasting, but so are the kind of persons these speakers are. The ten year old boy in ‘The Man Of the House’ is more mentally mature than the girl in ‘The Day the World Almost Came to An End.’ The boy, as the title suggests, takes on
A theme is the meaning behind a story, occasionally defined as the moral of the story. Themes can differ from one end of the world to the other, as it does in many books. The Droughtlanders by Carrie Mac is a futuristic version of the world which has been divided into two parts. The rich and the poor, the healthy and the sick, otherwise known as Keyland and Droughtland. Keyland is where all the rich people with extravagant lands and lives live. Droughtland is a disease-ridden land where all poor people are being forced to live. Society treats Droughtland poorly and they decide to take action. Thus starting the revolution. Carrie Mac portrays many themes in different ways throughout the book. However the major theme the book revolves around is that; No matter how rich or poor a person is, or what gender, race, or sexuality they are, in the end, they are all the same and deserve to be treated equally. In addition, the book shows that when everyone is treated equally there is so much more that everyone can accomplish. The theme is being portrayed through the narrative point of view, setting and atmosphere, and character development.

All literature is created by themes, without themes, they would simply be stories, and within those themes are patterns; constantly repeating throughout the work. Throughout the novel, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the use of themes and repeating patterns are seen through four different families. Some of the most prominent themes or patterns are family, specifically mother-daughter relationships, women and femininity, and growth in characters.
How does the author position the reader towards the major theme using the narrative elements?
Cite textual evidence to support your theme statements. Give one example from your story (quote and page number) to support each of the themes you have listed.
The narrator of the story “The Fall of the House of Usher” is a interesting character. Throughout the story the narrator interacts with Roderick and Madeline and witnesses their mental illnesses and Rodericks physical illness and how the incest between their ancestors have caused major problems in the family. What the narrator witnesses in the story is traumatic and in certain ways very life changing or altering. As a result of the events that occur in the Usher family home the narrator becomes unreliable as a narrator. The narrator is unreliable as a narrator because of the traumatic events that occur in the Usher family house and how they could have compromised the narrator's credibility as a narrator by changing or traumatizing him, and the events that occurred right before the Usher family house collapsed.
