The novel, The Dead and the Gone, written by Susan Beth Pfeffer, has a dark and terrifying feeling. This book has haunting themes of family, faith, personal change, and courage about a young boy who takes charge for something he has never before. It devastates readers with brutal apocalyptic events that are yet, so detailed and descriptive that the novel will knock you off your feet.
Alex Morales, a 17-year old boy who comes from a poor, Puerto Rican family. Alex is used to working hard for what he wants, and what he wants is to succeed. But his carefully laid out plans for senior year and college are destroyed when an asteroid crashes into the moon knocking the moon out of its orbit, causing the lunar orbit to become closer, which means a stronger gravitational pull towards Earth. A stronger gravitational pull leads to tsunamis and volcanic eruptions in places they don’t usually occur, in

It is very shocking to read about the journeys he goes through, traveling all over New York, just to find his parents while taking care of his siblings. I really enjoy how the author puts tension into Alex's day-to-day struggles through chilling moral dilemmas, whether to rob the dead, who to save during a food riot and how long to preserve the hope that his parents might return. Throughout the book, it was amusing to read and notice how Alex matures as he goes through each obstacle, caring more and more for his sisters and wondering if they all will ever see their parents alive again. The journeys he goes on involve several natural disasters making the novel so astounding. Just imagine seeing volcanic eruptions and tsunamis flood all the way to New York City. They must’ve been exasperating for Alex since his main goal was just to bring his family back together. In the end, who knew a 17-year old boy could go through so much drama in such a small area with little

When a mentor gives you lemons, you make the lemonade. In the book The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, the person most important in Bod Owens’s life is his mentor, Silas. Bod Owens did not have the average teenage life; he was raised by two dead parents who live in a graveyard, and was not allowed to leave the graveyard unless his parents gave him permission. The lady on the Grey is the symbol of death that mentors Silas, which gives her and Silas a similar “job” in their afterlife.
Being a novel, Gone expresses the theme of the importance of kids through the use of literary and narrative elements. At the beginning of the novel, everybody over the age of fifteen disappears, leaving only the children to fend for
The Forgotten Dead takes in an account in US History that the problem of lynching did not only occurred in the US Southern states with African-Americans, but it also occurred in the US southwest with the Mexican-Americans.
There were a few points in this book that taught me about life and how crazy it can be sometimes. The photographer named Fulgencio was very afraid of hitch hiking to Mexico City with a stranger, especially with all of us expensive equipment. On the ride, Fulgencio is so paranoid that the guy is going to kill him, he grabs a machete out of the back of the truck. In doing so he gets kicked out of the car and loses all of his photography equipment anyways. This taught me that we need to trust each other more, Just because there are a few crazy people in the world, we shouldn't let them give us all a bad name. I mean, the guy picked Fulgencio up when he was in desperate need of a car, and gives him a ride. He should have been thankful, not picked up a machete and threaten the guy. Another thing this book taught me was that just because your sister doesn't want your kid anymore because she
When we have strong love for others, we take risks, we go against our beliefs, we put ourselves in danger, and we let our loved ones go. Without love, there would be none of that. In this book, The Dead and the Gone, written by Susan Beth Pfeffer, a comet smashes the moon closer to earth and it creates all sorts of problems. Alex, a teenage boy with two sisters, starts a long journey of survival and risks. This story is so realistic, at times was hard to read. You start to ask yourself these tough questions, like what you would do in a specific situation. Through out the whole story, love is definitely a recurring theme. It shows you how well love can hold a family is distress together.
The novel, The Dead and the Gone, by Susan Beth Pfeffer, is about a 17 year old boy having to be responsible for his two siblings, 12 and 14, in New York, after a natural disaster that affected many places throughout the world. In this science fiction novel, the Earth’s moon is knocked off of its orbit, and closer to the Earth, after being hit by an asteroid. This was followed by tsunamis, earthquakes, and many other natural disasters, that made food supply and comfortable shelter/ homes low, expensive, and hard to find or get, because of the gravitational pull of the moon becoming much stronger. On the first day of this catastrophe, the main characters’, Alex, Bri, and Julie, mother, Mami, was called in from the hospital, and the three never received word from her after that day. As for their father, Papi, he had gone to Puerto Rico for his mother’s funeral.
One of the themes that was pointed out through the book is, family is worth dying for. Alex proves this over and over again when he chooses to walk to Warren where his family is. He could have easily stayed and found a safer way out but he needed his family so much that he risked his life to walk through ash and snow just to
The Book of the Dead is a funerary text from ancient Egypt. It was used during the New Kingdom which was around 1550 BC to 50 BC. Other translations of the book include “Book of Coming Forth by Day” and “Book of Emerging Forth into the Light.” The book is basically a loose collection of texts which was intended to assist the dead on their journey into the underworld and into the afterlife. Over a thousand-year period the book was constructed and the authors included many different priests over that time period.
My favorite part of the book by far was watching Alex develop as a character and learn how to deal with his problems while helping out Solomon.
In the novel The Dead, Gabriel Conroy, who is the nephew of Julia and Kate Morkan, is the main character of the story. One night he and his wife attended a party, which was given by his two aunts, and there were many other members in the party. The story revolves around their life and memories.Gabriel Conroy felt a blur between his soul and the dead. Some people died, but they are still alive because they have true love. Some people are alive, but they are still dead because they never love.I like the story for three reasons.
The power of the story has been very much a part of the lives of humans throughout time. The story is able to bring the past to the present and the dead to the living. The story can make the blind see. The story is able to make others feel for events in time that they have never experienced. The story has a profound effect on both the teller and the audience. As the audience is thought to be the beneficiary or the storytelling process, the teller is able to relive the times of old, or even teach a valuable lesson to his or her audience. Thus, allowing both parties to gain something intangible throughout this process. In “The Lives of the Dead,” O’Brien conveys the importance of storytelling and imagination by suggesting that the dead can be brought back to life in the minds of the people who hear it.
September 21, 2016 (SSB) — Revering the dead is culture of humanity. It is done in different parts of the world and by different communities. In Traditional American Indian burial prayer, for instance, the respect of the dead is shown in the way they are talked to as if they are alive and their prayer goes as follows:
