Over the past few decades gun control has come to the fore front of debate in politics and the mass media. It's no wonder that in the wake of the recent school shootings and attacks on churches that people are beginning to fear guns. People are beginning to see guns as an object of death and destruction and not as what they are meant to be. While guns are used in war they are not intended to kill innocent people, guns are intended to be used by experienced gun handlers for protection and hunting. When used properly a gun is no more dangerous than a car or a knife, all of these can be used in crime but none of them are intended to be. Guns have been around for hundreds of years, so why is it that only recently people have been shooting …show more content…
The biggest flaw is that the people who face the worst punishment are the people who have registered their guns, and I very highly doubt that criminal tell the state that they have a gun that they have used or plan to use in a crime. This means that for the most part only law-abiding citizens are at risk of having their guns taken away or even being thrown in jail. Even some people who support gun control know that not all laws work the way they are supposed to; "California has some of the country's strictest, most intrusive gun laws. Those didn't prevent the shootings either" (Rimensnyder). There is no perfect law that will make criminals stop using guns illegally or keep guns out of the hands of children. As much as I hate to admit it young kids who don't know a shotgun from a squirt gun will get a hold of guns, just like kids get a hold of cigarettes and alchohol and drugs. Even drugs, something illegal for anyone to have at any age or any time gets into the hands of kids, not because there is a lack of gun laws but because there is an excess of people who don't care about those laws. While we may never solve the problem of criminals getting guns, cigarettes, alchohol and drugs to those who don't fully understand what they
Gun Control Laws have been proven ineffective. Cities like Chicago and Detroit have very strict gun control laws, yet they have some of the highest crime rates, whereas cities with more guns have lower crime rates. Places that have a higher rate of gun ownership, have less murders. Gun control laws do not prevent criminals from breaking the law. Criminals will still obtain firearms, or
Gun control in the United States has been a controversial issue for some time now. So much so that the Supreme Court even refuses to address this issue directly. Gun control really boils down to the the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Many people have different interpretations of the Second Amendment and the trenches are dug in deep on this issue. The Second Amendment can not provide the right to bear all types of arms to protect the people from governmental tyranny. If the Second Amendment was absolute, then we would allow the public to possess nuclear weapons, missiles, and other such arms, because like the 9 mm handgun that is an arm, a nuclear warhead is also a type of arm. The more our government restricts our rights to own
The debate over the right to bear arms according to the Second Amendment has been a hotly contested issue for many years in American history. The matter has been one of the most controversial issues in the second half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first; disputed between politicians on the liberal and conservative side along with issues such as abortion, capital punishment, and gay marriage. The Supreme Court has officially defined the controversial Second Amendment by stating that states have the right to maintain a militia separate from a federally controlled army (Gale Encyclopedia, pg. 155-162). However, “Courts have consistently held that the state and federal governments may lawfully regulate the sale, transfer,
Roughly 16,459 murders were committed in the United States during 2016. Of these, about 11,961 or 73% were committed with firearms because people have been killed with gun shot, example the las vegas shooting. A Pew Foundation report found that 79% of male gun owners and 80% of female gun owners said owning a gun made them feel safer, and 64% of people living in a home in which someone else owns a gun felt safer. The Centers for Disease Control listed firearms as the #12 cause of all deaths between 1999 and 2013, representing 1.3% of total deaths. They were also the #1 method of death by homicide (66.6% of all homicides) and by suicide (52.2% of all suicides).

The Constitution of the United States of America went into effect on March 4, 1789. It has been amended twenty-seven times. The first ten amendments are known as the Bill of Rights. It contains valuable freedoms which the founders thought necessary and were left out of the constitution. The Bill of Rights was ratified on December 15, 1791. (United States Constitution) The Second Amendment to the Constitution has drawn a great deal of criticism especially in recent years. The topic of gun control is controversial, and issues involving it have gone to the Supreme Court.
Imagine a small, happy family with a mom, a dad, and a little baby girl. Now imagine them hiding together in fear in the corner of their house as a man holds them at gunpoint, robbing them of everything they have. They can’t defend themselves because there has been a recent ban on all handguns in the United States. Scenarios like this will happen every day if we allow more gun control laws to be put into effect. Guns are used in defensive ways 250,000 to 350,000 times a year (Barrett). Can you imagine America losing that many more people every year, all because they enforced laws that wouldn’t allow everyone to have a gun? Gun laws in the United States are effective as they are and do not need to be added to or changed. In order to truly understand why, it is important to examine the causes of the problem, the effects of the problem, and what is being done or what can be done to help solve the problem.
America is the most well armed nation in the world, with American citizens owning about 270 million of the world’s 875 million firearms (Marshall). Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws. Hence, gun control is a frequently discussed controversial topic in
Gun control has not been effective in the history of the United States. Even with laws that restrict gun ownership, it will not deter or prevent criminals from obtaining weapons or crimes from happening. Statistics can back up both sides of the gun control argument, but in reality simply having stricter gun laws does not stop crimes. Even with stringent gun laws criminals will find ways around them legally or illegally.
Republicans are eager to shut down this Colorado gun bill. Here’s why their dream could backfire big time.
"I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it."
Man has always found a suitable weapon do his bidding. Yet in our day, one weapon gets more attention (and blame) than anything else. This item is the firearm. The gun was first invented in China about 1250 A.D. Primitive
The cliché expression “Gun’s kill people” frequently used in today’s society has many rational flaws. If one truly believes a gun is the cause of the victim’s death, they have serious issues. The people behind the gun who are loading, aiming, and pulling the trigger are responsible for the lives ended. Guns are used as weapons, just like knives, bombs, rope, gas, and other tools are used. The question is should there be national gun control in America? Why should the government have the authority to take away Americans guaranteed second amendment right? Why should the government have the power to deny a person’s right of self-defense? There should not be national gun control laws in America because they violate the second amendment right, and because gun control takes away the individual safety of Americans.
In a world where we are constantly viewing violent acts, it's not really a surprise many may find guns to be a controversial weapons. Guns can be seen by many as way to find protection within themselves but other may see it as an act of violence waiting to happen. The reasonable act to take against guns would be simply banning them once and for all because it many seem as though if there are no guns at reach then there is really no more need to have fear. Although banning guns may seem like the best option many are opposed because they consider legal restraints against guns to be a weakness or even a form of self-imposed vulnerability towards attacks whether personal or terrorist. Those who see guns as a form of self-defense may find that to
Since the electoral race of 2016, there have been many disputes in the United States. For instance, whether they should keep the current healthcare or repeal it, raise or cut taxes, or in this case, have gun control. Hillary Clinton agrees with Barack Obama that guns should be restricted, since there have been so many shootings in the past few years. Despite the mass shootings, President Trump does not believe in limiting guns, and owners of firearms do not either. It is understandable why there should be gun control, but there are sensible reasons why half of the nation does not think it is necessary. The news and mass media overexaggerate lots of times, but statistics show the opposite. Guns are helpful for self-defense, since gun control will not stop criminals.
