Do you feel safe knowing your neighbor has the legal right to own a weapon that could end your life? Gun control in America has been a long fought out debate. Republicans typically believe that it should be entirely legal for Americans to own guns because it is their right from the Constitution and they need it to defend themselves. Democrats typically believe that guns should not be legal because they are dangerous weapons and they can be abused by violent people. The debate over gun laws has continued to divide American because of the many topics that people similarly address yet differently view and the different topics that some people solely argue and some completely disregard.

This structure allows the ideas to flow more clearly to the reader the, but the stiff structure shows a lack of passion to the article that Bovy clearly had. Bovy and Wilson differed in that their tones, structures and overall topics of their articles which left the reader with different feelings and different mindsets after reading each article.
The similar focus on the effect of the media on the spreading beliefs about gun control makes it clear that the media is incredibly influential in the arguments both for and against gun control. Bovy believes that, even though the media helps spread the belief that gun control is necessary, the media does not put out a strong enough argument. Bovy states that he believes, “The recent New York Times front-page editorial, as much as it infuriated some, was still too tentative” (2). By addressing the media, Bovy both claims that the media influences gun control while also stating his opinion on the effect of media on the topic of gun control. Also, by claiming that the article angered people, Bovy makes the claim that the media uses big and emotional words to persuade and scare some people or anger other people because the other people may disagree with the large statement that is being made. Similarly, Wilson discusses how the media, despite what is going on in society at that time, argues in favor of gun control by using big titles and
There are many debates about gun violence and gun control, but no one can really find the common ground to stop the violence. Mallory Simon is an experienced writer who makes it aware that the people need take the shootings more literal than just brush them aside. She argues that there is a need for steps to be put into place to stop the reoccurrence of gun violence within our communities. She developed an article about the ongoing debate about gun violence, called “Gun Debate: Where is the Middle Ground?” She uses the emotional point of view from those that are affected by the violence, to show their concern and struggles they face in their lives to prevent the shootings.
The right to possess guns is a fundamental element to American identity. The right to own and operate guns under certain circumstances is in fact guaranteed as part of the United States Constitution. Over the course of American history and particularly in the 21st century, there exists a great debate over the possession of guns of private citizens. Both sides of the debate argue with fervor. There are those that argue fervently for the right to possess arms; they argue for guns with regard to home protection, property protection, personal security, and that it is a fundamental right as a citizen.
Taya Kyle, the author of the article “American Sniper Widow: Gun Control Won’t Protect Us”, believes that there are two sides of the argument on gun control. People can use statistics, facts, and real life examples to argue that there should be stricter control of guns in the US, but they cannot eliminate the emotional side of the story. While in the last two decades, violent crime rates have actually been reduced in the US, fears have gone up. Anyone can be a victim of a violent crime because if another person decides to do harm, they will do it under any circumstances.
Throughout the history of the United States of America there has been debate on gun control. The debate has become even more relevant as more semi-automatic assault rifles are being sold and the amount of shootings we have been having, especially in this last month. There are a variety of views one can take on this argument. Many conservatives have been saying that more gun control is not necessary as it’s not the guns killing the people, it’s the people pulling the trigger that are killing innocent lives. On the other hand, people who are more liberal would like to see legislation passed that would put control on the sale of firearms as keeping weapons out of the hands of dangerous people who will willingly pull the
The term ‘gun control’ is used to show the regulation of selling, owning and use of guns. This means there is going to be a lot of controversy regarding this, making it a very touchy topic for a lot of people in the world right now. Gun control laws vary greatly, for example in places like the United Kingdom, where the gun laws are so strict that even police officers aren’t allowed to use them. Only special task forces within the police departments are. Compared to places like the United States, where there isn’t a federal gun control law in place anymore. Opponents argue that it is unconstitutional to take away kind of gun from an American citizen. They also argue that it is not the guns that commit these horrible crimes, but instead it’s the people behind the guns that commit them. But a gun is a tool that can be used for good intentions or evil intentions. And in most cases, the bad ones have a heavier effect or outcome. The US should enforce strict national gun control laws that will in the end help save the lives of men, women and children because if they do not, they will be seeing more tragedies through the country just like the one that had happened at Sandy Hook Elementary.
On Wednesday June 18, 2015 nine shot dead at a historical black church in Charleston, South Dakota and only a month later on July 16, 2015 in Chattanooga, Tennessee with five dead leaving citizens devastated. The past year contains more than 350 mass shootings, averaging 1.02 shootings per day and continuous growing number of deaths, multiple mass shootings around the world leaving dozens of victims in its path. There is no exact definition of mass shootings, but most sources believe it is when four or more people are shot in one location. Citizens in America are easily able to obtain a gun and the growing issue is whether this should change and stronger laws in place. Although citizens believe gun control laws take away second amendment and right to protect themselves, mass shootings are increasing yearly and action needs to happen to prevent the next attack.
In about every nation, gun control has always been an issue of controversy. Gun control laws are quite different from country to country, each possessing different requirements, specifications, and ordinances, so on and so on. What will be examined are the specified gun control laws in three international countries, ranging from Canada, Australia, and Japan, as well as a comparison and contrast of the the similarities and unique differences toward American gun control laws and those in other countries, and finally, the effects of having loose gun control laws. Unlike America, these countries possess stricter laws regarding gun control.
The debate over stricter gun laws has been ongoing in the United States for quite some time now. Individuals who oppose stricter gun control laws argue that the second amendment to the constitution of the United States constitute part of the bill of rights that protect the right of American citizens to bear arms, and any attempt to set up laws for gun control will be a direct violation of this (Hofstadter 10). They argue that the primary purpose of the amendment was to ensure that American Citizens had the capability to protect themselves against criminal activities and defend the country against external aggression. From a personal perspective, the recent surge in instances of gun violence in the United States of America indicates that stricter gun control laws are necessary for the safety of the American citizenry. Thus, this paper is going to focus on highlighting the benefits of more stringent gun control laws and why members of the public should support it.
The gun control issue has recently created a massive uproar throughout the U.S. due to some major horrific events such as the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, where 32 people were killed, the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012 where 27 people were killed, mostly children, and the Columbine shooting in 1999 where 13 people were killed, (CNN) as well as many others. To some, it is a crime issue, to others it’s a right’s issue. It is, obviously, a safety issue, an education issue, a racial issue, and a political issue, among others, and within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control, the Democrats, and those who
Guns have been around for a very long time. People love being able to have the freedom to do what they want, especially when they can possess something that make them feel superior. The introduction of the Second Amendment opens up the controversial, yet well anticipated opportunity for United State citizens to be able to own guns. Americans enjoy the benefit of being able to own guns for decades over people in other countries. People can buy guns and carry them around in public. They own guns for many reasons such as to hunt, to protect themselves, and simply to satisfy their desire of owning a gun, but in recent years, the issue of people carry guns has become a problem. There are so many people get killed by guns in different parts of
The Sandy Hook incident that took place in Newtown, Connecticut has caused a lot of people to rethink about the second amendment and even go on to alter it. A lot of people think that the availability of weapons for people is the reason for these shootings. It now appears that the cause that re started this entire episode which was the Sandy Hook incident will not be fixed by what the democrats are proposing as a solution will not be solved. It appears that the weapons Adam Lanza obtained from his shooting were actually his mother. Lanza's mother purchased the gun in accord with the Connecticut laws. It appears that the restrictive legislation that has been suggested for this state would still not reduce his access to them. Gun control basically refers to the various means of probation or restrictions on keeping weapons with a person. These restrictions look over not only the possession of firearms, but on the transport and use of them.
"I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around, I want to be in control of it."
Hello I will be discussing current gun laws. Basically, I will be disputing the statement that we in American should have stricter gun laws in all cities in efforts to keep down gun related crimes and murders. Compared to states that have strict gun laws, states that have lax or no gun laws do not have less crime rates. In fact, out of the 50 states that allow citizens to have a concealed weapons license only about 10 have crime rates that need their laws to be revamped. That is only 5%. So here are some statistics and points that will get you to see things from a proven standpoint.
The controversial issue of gun control is one of the most debatable topics among politicians and civilians alike. This is because of the complexity of gun control and the long history that is related to the subject. Gun control is typically an effort, by the government, to create legislation that regulates the sale and use of firearms within the country. There are various arguments that surround this topic which include gun-related violence, accidents, self-defense, murders, suicide, constitutional rights, and so on. James Q. Wilson, a professor who has taught at Pepperdine University, Harvard University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, and a published author of several books, take a negative stance on the subject of gun control. Wilson contributed to the gun control debate in the last few years with his written op-ed article. According to Wilson, there is no possible method to eradicate the hundreds and millions of guns that exist within the country, restrictive gun laws will not significantly affect the United States’ murder rate, and that guns play an important role in self-defense in everyday lives. Contrary to what Wilson believes, strict gun control is necessary and should be enforced to ensure public safety because gun laws have the power to produce a positive outcome in the long run, reduce gun-related violence, and reduce the numerous risks that gun ownership open.
Americans and Guns have prolonged history together, and there is ongoing debate on gun rights and its controls. Discussions have been held on the issue of gun rights since ancient times. Political theorist John Locke and Jean Rousseau observed the ownership of weapons as a sign of personal liberty and an important element of government. Similarly, Federalist James Madison shared the same views that Americans have advantage of being armed and should not fear the government. Patrick Henry also declared, "The great principle is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able to may have a gun”(Guns and Violence, 2014). According to the Second Amendment of the constitution, Americans have right to bear arms which is state as "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to security of the free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (2). The Second Amendment faces the great controversy as its opponents argue that the second Amendment allow only military forces to the right to bear arms. On the contrary, It supporters debate that the amendment is for the protection of general public which is a part of general militia. Congress proposed gun laws to resolve the discussion among debaters and to regulate the sale of weapons to protect the citizens from gun violence. The laws also vary from state to state to carry arms and apply restrictions to prevent children and youth from gun violence. Although, the gun control laws prohibit the possession of
