A key element used to drive the nursing practice forward is the ability to adapt and incorporate new ideas and technologies with an open mind, and the use of a scientific approach. According to (HRSA, 2015) telehealth is the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration. Technologies include video conferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless communications. When conducting research into what types of telehealth operations will be successful and beneficial one must look into certain areas of telehealth such as; right equipment …show more content…
Currently the biggest areas being telehealth for the elderly are diabetic control, heart monitoring, and standard daily vitals. The most interesting piece of equipment used to monitor these is the Healthstats watch (Bartz, 2014). The Healthstats watch monitors pulse, heart rate, O2, sleeping statistics, and patient activity. The only issue that most manufacturers have come across is monitoring blood pressure with a watch because of how much power it consumes. A huge leap forward in this tech though is what Healthstats has been working on. Healthstats has created a new blood pressure watch which uses a newly devised algorithm to record blood pressure. The way it works is you sync the watch to their blood pressure machine. You take a couple blood pressure readings with a normal cuff and the data syncs to the watch. What happens next is pretty amazing, the watch now uses the shape of the pressure waves that run to the wrists and determines your blood pressure. This technology seamlessly syncs with the other functions of the watch prior and still can run off a 5 day battery life. Armed with a computer, a health watch, and a video camera the beginnings of setting up a telehealth in your home or remote area seem incredibly easy and cost efficient. Currently many fields are attempting to incorporate the use of specialized equipment in order to use telehealth to
Telemedicine is a comprehensive term for the support of long distance clinical healthcare, patient and professional health-related education, public health, and health administration. With the growing population and the prevalence of enduring diseases across the globe, there are vital telemedicine requirements to find ways to improve outcomes of patients healthcare, access to care, and reduces the cost of clinical care. Using continual and uninterrupted remote health monitoring of patients, healthcare providers, insurance payors, and everyone is looking to alter significantly how care is delivered to patients, while reducing cost of care in equivalent time.
The benefits of telehealth consultations are immeasurable; clients are able to access a knowledgeable health care professional and receive a telephone triage/assessment and recommendations. This allows the patient to have immediate access to good health advice and quicker solutions. Telemedicine is one of the many vehicles of telehealth; for example, the cardiologist orders an outpatient Holter Monitor trial to evaluate arrhythmias. The technician calls the patient at the sign of any abnormal rhythm and investigate the activity performed when the reading fluctuation then the reported is communicated to the cardiologist. If warranted, the cardiology staff will contact the patient with instructions schedule an immediate appointment. Telehealth services resources would benefit the client in this next example, an individual’s come in for a sick visit expecting a prescription to be written for their illness; they receive informative instructions because of the nature of the
I have no personal experience with telehealth, but I have witness a few promotional videos over the recent years. As technology continues to grow within the healthcare system, it will allow us to provide better care whether we are face-to-face or miles apart. Telehealth is can be beneficial to not only the healthcare workers but always the patient. Telehealth allows the healthcare system to ensure continuity of care and also evaluate patient compliance to the plan of care. Since technology is so prominent in todays society, telehealth allows the patients to have quick and easy way to contact their provider via email, blog, or videochat.
Tomika, a co-worker is excited about her new job working for an agency that installs tele-monitoring equipment into the homes of people with chronic illnesses. She will monitor the patients using the equipment with the goal of detecting problems before these patients are readmitted to the hospital. A job in telenursing enables the nurse to work from home assessing and interacting with her patients through videoconferencing. According to a scholarly journal of the American Nurses of Association, there has been an escalation in deployment of remote technology to enhance health care, and an increasing acceptance of these technologies. There are also legal and regulatory questions pertaining to the provision of healthcare using these technologies
Telehealth is emerging as a critical component of the healthcare crisis solution. Telehealth holds the promise to significantly impact some of the most challenging problems of our current healthcare system: access to care, cost effective delivery, and distribution of limited providers. Telehealth can change the current paradigm of care and allow for improved access and improved health outcomes in cost effective ways. That is the difference in telehealth and
Tele-nursing is the use of telecommunications technology such as videos, computers and tele-monitoring technologies to provide nursing care and advice at a distance. This growing technology offers many advantages in the delivery of healthcare information, disease monitoring, health promotion and disease prevention services, as well as nursing diagnosis, treatment and education to patient at home from a centralized location. Tele-nursing can be instrumental in helping patients and families to be active participants in their care, particularly in the self-management of chronic illness such as congestive heart failure. It is a service that is currently offered by a growing number of hospitals and health maintenance
As hospitals care for more and sicker patients, unique care platforms are being explored to ensure the highest level of care is provided. We must remember that only around 50% of patients within a critical care setting receive the best practice recommendations (Bauman & Hyzy, 2012). To overcome this care gap, telemedicine or the tele health concept is being explored. Grown from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), telemedicine has been around for 50 years and uses television and/or communication technology to provide patient care (Rogove, 2012). This platform has numerous advantages that include bringing more specialized care to the bedside, expanded monitoring systems as well as improved clinical outcomes (Winterbottom & Campbell, 2012).
This technology would help doctors easily monitor their patients at the hospital as well as after they are released. They would be able to not only record a patient’s heart rate but also their body temperature, the patients would also be able to prick their finger with a utensil in the watch. The watch would be able to do a basic analysis of the blood and it would be sent to their doctor so that the patient would not be required to constantly
Telehealth technology also plays a significant role in time and cost saving (Mofat& Ely 2010). Through the technological applications, nurses are in a position to communicate and monitor their outpatients without the need to travel (Nagel et al., 2015). Also, through applications such as teleconferencing, health specialists such as cardiologists are now in a position to train the interns in the field without the need to travel to his/her theater (Tuerk & Shore, 2014).
The application of telehealth by home health agencies continues to grow widely and reduce the need for hospitalization. This is made possible by the use of teleconference tools, tele nursing and tele care. With these tools the nurse will be able to have access to website from their offices with their own personal computer
Telehealth includes three modalities; Clinical Video Telehealth, Home Telehealth and Store and Forward Telehealth. All three of these programs strive to meet individual program goals as well as overarching goals. As a leader in this field I work with them to develop both short and long term goals as well as provide guidance and support to assist them in attaining their goals. I establish work groups among the 10 facilities to encourage individuals with the same interests to work together to develop plans or projects that we will implement to maintain consistency among the medical centers. I host calls to enhance communication and collaboration, share best practices and acknowledge program successes and
Telehealth service is an ideology to conduct the health service in long distance, usually based on the internet. However, the concept of telehealth service currently is usually appeared in academia and seldom implemented in the health care industry. The most
Many people are familiar with wearable push-button devices that can, for example, alert a caregiver in the event of a fall. But wearable technology can do much more than that. Today, healthcare providers are excited about the potential of wearable devices to monitor vital signs like blood pressure as well as early warning signs of more serious conditions like heart attack or infection.
The provision of providing healthcare to patients, from a distance far away from his/her home is telehealthcare (7, p.1). To improve the convenience, quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, especially for the benefit of the patients, telehealthcare has attracted a greater interest globally (7, p.1). Telehealthcare, telemedicine, telecare and home monitoring are popular terms used to describe delivery of healthcare from remote (7, p.2). Telehealthcare is the intervention between a patient and a healthcare provider over a distance, that has two models, namely synchronous and asynchronous models (7, p.2).
Computers, smartphones and even televisions are continually changing with the advancement of technology, this is also true in healthcare. Imagine sitting in front of your computer screen, smartphone or smart t.v. and being able to have a face to face conversation with a home health nurse or other health care provider. In some regions of the country this is the here and now, in others it is slowly being implemented into routine healthcare. This type of healthcare is known as telenursing. The term telenursing means “the use of telecommunications and IT for the delivery of nursing services.” (Hebda & Czar, 2013, p. 506). There is also the term telehealth that is used in conjunction with telenursing and
