One of the biggest security agencies in which we have today is the Department of Homeland Security. They were created in 2001-2003 to stop any threats or terrorist attacks towards the United States. They employ many people from different fields since they need overall intelligence on things. The department has roughly over 100 agencies branching from them. Homeland security was created not that long ago. It is located in Washington DC in the Nebraska Avenue Complex and that’s where it started. Although it wasn’t the first time the Nebraska Avenue Complex was being used, before this it was used for a Seminary, then Naval Communications then they thought it would be a good location for the DHS and it became the headquarters operation. The DHS was created in a response to the September 11th, 2001 attack on the twin towers in New York. They had chosen Tom Ridge the Governor of Pennsylvania to be the director of Homeland Security. With the passage of the Homeland Security Act by Congress in November 2002, the Department of Homeland Security formally came into being as a stand-alone, Cabinet-level department to further coordinate and unify national homeland security efforts, opening its doors on March 1, 2003(Homeland Security). The Homeland Security Act of 2002 stated the mission of DHS which is to protect the homeland of the United States from any terrorist attacks, and to try to prevent and/or reduce them.
