The Devil in the White City Eric Larson, in The Devil in the White City, elucidates all the different aspects of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. From the small decisions made to ensure that the fair is a huge success to the shadows creeping in the background, Larson tells the extraordinary story of two men. One man being the architect behind the magnificence of the fair, and the other a serial killer using the fair to entice his victims into his clutches. The authors purpose is to emphasize the importance, and excitement, of both of these historical events and reveal how they made America what she is today. Larson establishes credibility with the reader by telling them a short history of the people of any sort of significance in the book. This gives him credibility because it shows you, as the reader, that he did indeed do the necessary research to accurately portray the characters on events in history. Also, there is obvious evidence of extensive research done on the subject of both the fair and the hotel where Holmes victims were killed. Although he writes it like a story, Larson shows you in his writing that all the facts are true and he is indeed well read on the subject by referring to other people and authors who also wrote on this topic. Another way Larson appeals to ethos is by comparing events and inventions from the time of the fair to today’s world. For example, the place where the hotel was is now a shady area in modern Chicago and Jackson Park, the place where the fair was held, is in the nicer section of Chicago where respected businessmen and well off families live today. This credibility established by Larson help prove that history is indeed important and has a great impact on the modern world as it is
