Contradicting the glowing reviews of this novel, there are many things that can be improved about The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen. The point of view, as it came from a twelve year old, withheld some important points and perspectives. Although it gave an opportunity for some serious character development, certain scenes were trivialized, such as the dinner. Hannah described her discomfort for most of the time instead of focusing on the importance and meaning of certain moments. Because of this, the reader doesn’t have an opportunity to learn more about modern Jewish tradition, something that seems almost obvious to have in this type of book. Although the concept of time- travel and her disappearing memories were very interesting, one doesn’t

Her and her family live in the United States, as their ancestors had traveled to America after the conclusion of World War II and the Holocaust. The movie goes back in time to 1942 due to Hannah’s lacking interest in learning about her family’s past. The time travel proves as a lesson to Hannah, as it takes her through t he Holocaust with her own family members. Throughout the movie, there are several accuracies and inaccuracies concerning history. Overall, the movie is very precise in reenacting history in order to portray its message about the Holocaust.

In “The Devil’s Arithmetic,” book and movie, there are many similarities including the same allusion of “The Wizard of Oz,” Hannah is similar, they have man vs. society, and man vs. self. “The Wizard of Oz,” is an allusion meaning it was mentioned in the book. Oz is similar to the book as Hannah was in a dream just like Dorothy. Hannah is another similarity in the book and movie as Hannah keeps the same traits in both the book and movie. She hates Jewish history towards the beginning, and respects it in the end. Another similarity is the conflict of man vs. society. Man vs. society is shown as it is the Jews vs. the Nazis society. One other similarity is man vs. self as Hannah still has an internal conflict in both the movie and book. This conflict is she questions is there any more I can do, and are we monsters or heroes.

In the beginning of The Devil’s Arithmetic a song that would represent this part would be “Wake Me Up” by Avicii. In the story, Hannah did not understand the importance of why Jews do what they do. Therefore causing her to act how she does in the beginning. The song represents not being able to understand the world around them, which is demonstrated through some of the lyrics. This relates to the book by showing the connection of mis-understanding certain scenarios.
The Devil’s Arithmetic movie and book were both an emotional story of a young girl and her journey back to the horrendous holocaust. They both followed along the same line of how we need to “always remember” the holocaust and the unmanly way people were treated. Through both were very eye-opening, they had major differences.
Religion. A large influence in many lives, belief in what’s right, and wishes in their life. This force propels the main characters in both books The Devil's Arithmetic and The Boy Who Dared experience strong faith at some point throughout the book, which urges both Hannah and Helmuth to go above and beyond. They are widely similar in that they are strong in religion and lead to tough decisions fueled by the values of religion (sacrifice, truthfullness, kindness). However, they both deeply differ, as shown in text how Hannah’s strength in faith make her realize she must remember her religion. Helmuth’s strong faith helps him find what is right and spread the truth.
The Holocaust was one of the world’s major tragedies. If you were a Jew the Nazis would take you to concentration camp and you would have to do everything they said, you would get your head shaved, and be treated awful. Millions died. They would choose Jews to take to the gas chamber, usually the weakest and most unhealthy ones because they weren’t much good to work anymore. “Yolen, Jane. The Devil's Arithmetic. They look at the ethics of virtue by Aristotle, Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics, and John Stuart Mill’s utilitarian happiness principle. They explain what each of these great thinkers argued constitutes moral behavior as well as their thoughts on what drives such behavior. They then apply these concepts to ethics training programs of modern day corporations. In short, one must have an understanding of the impetus of people’s ethical behaviors in order to implement an appropriate program to cultivate and reinforce the desired organization’s ethics.
No one thinks that they have an impact on the world. But everyone does; everyone is a number in some algorithm. Each one of us is turned into numbers and those stats become data and are used by scientists to either do good or in some cases, bad. The book “Weapons of Math Destruction”, Cathy O’Neil talks about the dangers of turning people into numbers and how people don 't even know that it is happening. A lot can go wrong when people are no longer people and they are turned into the just number. People could be placed in the wrong group because they went through a rough time for a short period, and that could ruin their lives, but computers only see numbers, not the person the number represents. Job interviews that should have happened, didn 't because the computer passed over them because of a certain number, not the actual person. A person could also be called in for a job because they may have seemed perfect, but they were the opposite of what they needed. And being in a certain area could then mean that a person is now associated with that group even though they never were. The scientist turns people into numbers so that they are easier to cataracts and target, even if those categories are unknown to the public and is causing harm.
