摘要
饮食文化是人类文化的重要组成部分,它直接关系到人类的身心健康。中西文化之间的差异导致了中西饮食文化的差异,而这种差异来自中西不同的价值观、思维方式和处世方式。本文对饮食观念、饮食结构和餐桌礼仪三方面的饮食文化内涵进行了研究,并分析了中西饮食文化的对立统一性,以及二者相互融合的趋势。了解中西饮食文化, 可以提高我们的跨文化交际意识和能力,可以避免跨文化交际过程中由于不同的饮食文化和观念而产生的矛盾和冲突,增进双方的了解和沟通。

Differences of food cultures in different countries are a phenomenon of cross-cultural communication. Studying these differences can train people’ adaptability in cross-cultural communication. Cross-cultural communication in the situation of globalization makes the different food cultures complementary and integrated.
II. Main Differences Between Chinese and Western Food Cultures
A. Conceptual Differences
Differences between American and Chinese food culture reflects two different food concepts and values. Chinese people are always upholding “People regard food as their heave, taste is the essence of food” .the eight major cuisines of china reflect the rich connotations of Chinese food culture. From this, we can know that the food is in a very important position in minds of Chinese people. Chinese food culture concerns the meaning of material and has a trend of achieving a mental need. Chinese food culture’s great sentiment is well established, so it has the very high prestige in the world. The Chinese people think that it is reasonable to eat three meals a day. Eating can relieve thirst and appease hunger, but it has some meanings. For example, when a child comes into the world, the relatives often eat the red-painted eggs. These kinds of eggs contain their wishes and their expectations. Life can be continued and the great expectations can be passed down from generation to generation. From a relative perspective, effective communication proves imperative in aiding efficient business transactions. The different cultures and nations involved in the launch of the fast-food franchise should aim at understanding one another’s culture despite their differences between culture, language, and way of life. To begin with, proper channels should be put in place to communicate important factors concerning the business without necessarily having an interpreter. In equal measure, some challenges present themselves during the presentation to the various individuals involved with the firm. For instance communicating may prove difficult putting into consideration that not all persons can speak fluently in English. Additionally the fact that American culture is typically made up of low-context practices, it may appear rude and ill-mannered for persons who originate from high-context cultures. A good illustration of the above-mentioned factor is that Chinese culture dictates that individuals should engage in typical chit-chat before getting down to serious business. In this instance, if the individual from any cultural background jumps in immediately to address serious matters, he or she is viewed as rude and insensitive.
The food is never just a food in the sociological perspective. The language of Food and the eating habits of an individual reflects his/her culture and background identity. Indeed, some cultures like Chinese, Mexican, Thai are well known for their food and the status of their religion. Through the lens of the first reading by Fischler (1988, p. 275) “Food is central to our sense of identity”. The following journal shapes the significance of phenomenological basis to understand the food and ideas of an individual. When it comes to things that are needed to sustain life, often times, these things are just part of the daily routine and have no positive, emotional stimulation. Food, on the other hand, is also required in order to survive, but for many it is one of the best parts of the day. Even though eating food is one of the most repetitive things we do as humans, it never gets old and is always exciting. Eating is almost always something that individuals look forward to and gives them a sense of joy. Each culture has a different approach on food eating habits and ways in which food is prepared, enjoyed, and consumed. Often times food practices by humans are determined by values, attitudes, beliefs, and environmental and religious circumstances; all of which are the products of tradition, culture, and contacts (Onuorah and Ayo, 2003). These unique variations in food consumption and food preparation make food habits absolutely fascinating and culturally distinct.

After reading this article, I’ve realized that the idea of food, eating, and even the type of food is different when compared to different cultures. Specifically, the article talks about food as an identity, as survival, as a status, as a pleasure, as a community, and as humanity. For each of these main ideas, the article gives an example of each culture and what they do differently with food. When people think about a certain culture, they initially think of the food associated with it. Food is a part of a culture’s identity, and because of that, it is a part of the individual’s identity as well. For example, the US is associated with hamburgers, Italy with pasta, and Mexico with tacos. This cultural association to the food we eat helps us to figure out who we are. Over time, food has become more of a spiritual act, rather than one of survival. We eat food for the feelings it elicits and the experiences it gives us. In a way, we really are what we eat.
Culture is not only reflected in the performing arts or languages, but it is also more able to reflect on the food that people under different food cultural backgrounds, their eating habits and tastes are different. Every place in this world had one or more typical foods to show its culture. Wuhan, where I grew up, is famous not only of its historical sites, like Yellow Crane Tower and Guiyuan Tempe but also famous of its characteristic snacks, such as Hot Dry Noodle, Doupi and duck necks. In these special foods, Hot Dry Noodle is the most important one because it is not only good at taste, but it also can show the culture of Wuhan that this city contains enthusiasm, wisdom, gentleness, and perseverance. In order to prove thesis, I am going to discuss the history of Hot Dry Noodles, Hot Dry Noodles in Wuhan people’ lives, and the culture aspect of Hot Dry Noodles.
Growing up, I had the privilege of exploring different cultures in my community; one aspect - food. A love for going to a Chinese restaurant by my school and converse in Mandarin Chinese with the waitress, or go to the Mexican grills near my home and learn the cuisine in Spanish, spurred my passion for finding a connection to my own culture’s value of food. With so many wide ranges of cultural foods, I have begun to learn that it wasn't just one culture that loved food or good times, but a universal theme.
1. The essay was talking about the huge different between Chinese’s food and American’s food and they are totally make different foods. Chinese don’t understand how the American people are cutting food with two hands and changing the fork from one hand to the other hand while they are eating food. This is new thing and amazing thing Chinese’s restaurant people are talking too much and crowded seating which is their culture.
It has a long established and well-developed culinary tradition. It is an important part of Chinese culture, which has its origins among the diverse regions of China as well as from Chinese people living in other parts of the world. It is fair to say that Chinese cuisine has influenced many other cuisines in Asia itself. The preferences for seasoning and cooking techniques of Chinese provinces depend on differences among historical background and ethnic groups. The geographic and topographic features, which include mountains, rivers, forests, and deserts, also have a strong influence on the local available ingredients. The color, smell, and taste are the three traditional aspects used to describe Chinese food. In China, it is considered inappropriate to use knives or forks on a dining table. Chopsticks are the main eating utensils used for cutting and picking up food – the predominance of chopsticks is the reason why most Chinese food is prepared in bite sized pieces or be so tender that it could be easily picked apart. In China, a good meal was expected to balance the four natures (hot, warm, cool, cold) and the five tastes (pungent, sweet, sour, bitter, salty). Salt had been used as a preservative since day one, but in cooking was only added in the form of Soy Sauce and not at the table. This paper will discuss the multifaceted relationships among food, and culture. I will be looking at the relationships people have with food, and explore how this relationship reveals information about them. Their food choices of individuals and groups, can reveal their ideals, likes and dislikes. Food choices tell the stories of where people have travelled and who they have met along the way.
Food is very much a part of pop culture, and the beliefs, practices, and trends in a culture affect its eating practices. Pop culture includes the ideas and objects generated by a society, including foods, and other systems, as well as the impact of these ideas and objects on society. For example, Mcdonald's is another of the thousands of fast food chains that populate our cities though they often use the term “popular culture” only to refer to media forms. Their popularity has also increased internationally. Although all humans need food to survive, people's food habits and how they obtain, prepare, and consume food, are the result of learned behaviors. Mcdonald’s, like other food chains, has made an effort to ‘localize’ its products so that they will be more successful in each different cultural context. These collective behaviors, as well as the values and attitudes they reflect, come to represent a group’s pop culture.
