Debra Brett is a 36 year old single mother housed in rented social housing on a south London high-rise housing estate. She is dependent on council contractors for repairs, with four children the flat is overcrowded,she feels invisible and hopeless.Debra Brett’s low income from benefits effect her education chances by her not being able to afford childcare, and are also effecting her older daughter’s education who is supplementing the family income by working part time while also at college.This will dictate the type of jobs possible for Debra and her family and prospective income of the family. Both children had been fully adopted by their families and, while Mai was provided with everything she needed growing up Tiffany and Haun had been supplied with so much more. Tiffany and Haun had met each other first, at their private elementary school, and later met Mai in high school. While all three children are equally intellectual Mai explains the first level of separation between them in her inner dialogue, “Haun and Tiffany didn’t even bother filling out the FASA forms or applying for scholarships” (Phan 155) which, in short, states that their parents are of the wealthier class. Jeannette and her siblings adapt to self- sufficiency from a young age, from being emotionally and physically neglected by their parents. The children don’t expect anything so they learn to work with what they have and what opportunities come their way. Jeannette saw the suffering of the family and took this leadership for the family guiding her sibling in the correct path.

In most if not all cases, the class you are born into will determine how you will be raised, and who you will grow up to become. Whether you can speak up for yourself, if you are humble with what you have or you have a more hectic schedule or not, it all plays into what class you are from. No two childhoods are equal and Annette Lareau in her book, Unequal Childhoods explains why this is the case. I will be examining chapters four, five, and seven. These chapters examine poor and working children and teenagers and how their childhoods differ and relate to each other based on the class they were born in whether that be lower class to the poor. What can be learned from examining these three kids, Harold McAllister, Katie Brindle, and Tyrec Taylor is the advantages and disadvantages of having a childhood in the class of the poor or working class.
This book can be very painful to read because many times the kids are much more responsible than the adults. Even so, the kids have to fend for themselves from a very young age. Upon Rex losing his job once again, Lori and Jeannette try to discuss ways to help make money for the family. Finding themselves unable to think of any helpful ways, Jeanette says, “I guess we can eat less,” to which Lori replies “We have before” (67). The face they have gone hungry many times before is extremely disappointing, especially since Rex and Rose are both completely capable of getting jobs. When Rex are Rose are arguing about not having money, Jeannette says “Tell them we like eating margarine, then maybe they’ll stop fighting” (70). It’s fine to live like that on your own, but you shouldn’t raise a kid in that kind of scenario.

However, when their mother came through the door and told them of a hungry family, the 4 women did not hesitate in giving away their luscious breakfast to those in need.
