Defining Career Readiness
The discipline of school counseling has evolved and grown from focusing on supporting student’s academic and personal/social needs to a well-rounded profession. Professional school counselors are looked at as advocates and conduits that are responsible for ensuring that students successfully transition through each educational stage from primary to their post-secondary opportunities. One reason for the change in direction was an increased focus on career counseling as an additional responsibility for professional school counselors. This additional component allowed counselors to synchronize their efforts towards ensuring that each student’s academic success and personal social growth were aligned with post-secondary options as well as potential career paths.
Enter into any high school in America and you will come across the term “College and Career Ready”; it is written in mission and vision statements throughout the country. According to Camara (2013), the push for college and career readiness came as a result of “high remediation and low completion rates in post-secondary education”. In fact, transitioning students into college is criteria for measuring school achievement and effective leadership within school districts.
