Disney has been an inspiration to kids since October 16, 1923. With the start of Mickey Mouse cartoons, Disney has created an empire of imagination. Ever since Snow White, Disney’s first princess in 1937, came on the screen, young females have been amazed by the vision of the “Disney Princess”. As the years went by, dozens of princesses have hit movie screens and Disney has made billions off of the profits from these individuals. In reality, Disney has influenced the immature views of what to expect of beauty from a woman. In recent times, the world’s view on woman is very unhealthy. “Disney doesn't exist to make kids feel good about themselves. No doubt the company is perfectly happy if that's a side effect! But Disney exists to make pots and pots of money.” (Faircloth, Jerks Will Never Let) After each movie is released, billions of dollars in merchandise are selling out worldwide, which exclude; dresses, dolls, and many areas of toys. There are countless thin princesses but there isn’t a single over weight doll selling in stores worldwide. It doesn’t give a role model for the girls who aren’t thin to look up or relate to. Disney is all about being role models and showing how a woman should act and behave. Which Disney portrays wonderfully but it doesn’t apply to a whole arrange of diverse clients. Disney is all make believe but each little girl always claims one to be their favorite based off the fact their princess may have the same hair or eye color or they may be wearing the prettiest dress or they may have the cutest story. But this also leaves over weight young girls without their own princess to relate to. Someone to show them that beauty isn’t defined by clothing size and that every individual body is beautiful. Someone to show them that they can have their own princess and take back confidence through this princess to show that they aren’t alone or better, they’re amazing just the way they are. Disney’s movies are mainly about a heroic princess facing her difficulties and triumphing past them.
Disney movies have been the leading outlets for child education and social learning. Due to such power of influence controversies have been raised which include the following, but not limited to, gender roles and stereotypes, issues of independence, and misrepresentation. Many people argue that despite the morals and messages that occur within such films there are still underlying messages that deal with beauty standards and norms. Did anyone realize that all of the Disney princesses have a waistline that is smaller than the span of their eyes? Throughout all generations, Disney princesses have acted as major role models in young girl's lives. However, are these female characters negatively influencing how these young girls reflect on themselves? Ideals taught at young ages, often continue with them as they grow into adulthood. Therefore, Disney should replace passive princesses with strong and realistic female roles.

Stephanie Hanes concludes that the Disney Princess craze is linked to self-objectification and the growing sexualization of young girls. Although she provided numerous facts the argument was unsuccessful because it was weak and confusing. Her own personal opinion on why she blamed the Disney Empire for sexualization amongst young girls was rarely voiced. Lastly the main idea of the article gets masked by controversial expert claims that are not linked to the topic.

Disney has played a big role in shaping not only societal viewpoints on what young girls should like, but also what little girls believe they should enjoy as well. Gender stereotypes have been around for a long time, but now with technology advancements, such as media in western society is able to play a bigger than ever role in influencing people’s perspectives. Not only do we see gender roles and stereotypes in television shows, but also in advertisements and in children’s toys. Although many readers of Peggy Orenstein’s “What’s wrong with Cinderella” have argued that the princess culture is corrupting today’s young girls and making them more dependent on men, a closer examination shows that many girls grow out of the princess phase with no negative repercussions and choose whatever passions they want.

Girls growing up in today’s society are being stripped of their childhoods. With fictional figures to dream of being, young girls aren’t falling in love with the beauty of the stories but more so they assume that they don’t look good enough to be like the world adored princesses. The author wrote this article in response to the epidemic of young girls growing up too fast and the concern it leaves. Between the Finucane Theory, the “Hottie Mystique” and the media onslaught will all reveal the beginning to a much bigger problem that these Disney princesses are creating. The author contends that young girls are losing sight of their childhoods and are becoming sexually advanced too soon.
In our modern society parents want to know who the best role models are for their children; especially parents of young girls. Most girls are introduced to Disney Princesses at a young age, but what most parents don’t know is that not all Disney Princesses are positive role models of modern society. The princesses were amazing role models for their time but since then many opinions have changed on what is expected of women and what is not some; people in society today can argue weather certain qualities that the princesses posses are acceptable for today’s youth. The Disney Princess Effect I felt as though the text related to me in regards to being a little girl and recalling exactly what the author is pertaining to. Going through the stages of wishing to be a princess or waiting for your prince to arrive for the simple fact of the visual enchantment television gave and then sooner or later growing up to only realize fairy tales and reality beg to differ. In the beginning, Stephanie Hanes writes “She came to believe that the $4 Billion Disney Princess empire was the first down a path of scarier challenges, from self-objection to cyberbullying to unhealth body image.” Having dealt with my own perseverance with body image I agree with Hanes and how the falsified happiness hammered into young girls is hindering. If we were to allow them to grow freely and not in a mold of what society perceives as beautiful we would have more intelligent, confident and free women. The problem is the hidden message Sleeping Beauty for example Aurora is described as an extraordinarily beautiful woman, so young girls will understand, even if they are not directly told, that is what society perceives as beautiful. If you have ever seen “Sleeping Beauty,” however, you will notice that Aurora’s figure is as impossible as Barbie’s for humans to achieve. For decades now, Disney Corporation has been providing us with countless films made to delight and amuse children and adults alike. But not all Disney films seem particularly appropriate for their target audience. Many of these films portray violence, gender inequality, and skewed views of leadership roles that seem altogether inappropriate for impressionable young children. Better and more contemporary heroines need to be added to Disney’s wall of princesses in order to counteract years of sexism.

Virtually every young girl identifies with princesses and has watched at least one Disney Princess movie. From the first movies of Snow White and Cinderella, to the later movies of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, to the most current movie Moana, Disney Princess movies permeate not only the movie theaters, but also our culture. In fact, “becoming a princess is as easy as purchasing a tiara and hosting a princess-themed birthday party or buying a Halloween costume and playing pretend” (Garabedian, 2014, p. 23). Nonetheless, as declared by Princess Merida in the movie Brave, “there comes a day when I don’t have to be a princess. No rules, no expectations. A day where anything can happen. A day where I can change my fate” (Andrews & Chapman, 2012). In other words, does the life of a princess measure up to the expectations of little girls everywhere? The Disney Princess brand has grown incredibly popular, especially with young girls. In spite of this, the franchise has also become extremely controversial due to potential gender stereotypes in the films. “Gender is one of the most discussed topics in today’s society…[it] represents and also reproduces certain attributes, expectations and roles which are associated with male and female…influencing the views and opinions of future generations” (Maity, 2014, p. 31). Yet, is the Disney Princess brand harmful to young children due to gender stereotypes? Two essays that contemplate the Disney Princess brand and gender stereotypes with opposite viewpoints on this controversial issue are “Girls on Film: The Real Problem with the Disney Princess Brand” by writer Monika Bartyzel and “In Defense of Princess Culture” by writer and mother Crystal Liechty. However, Liechty’s essay “In Defense of Princess Culture,” is the most effective article in convincing the audience of her point of view due to the claim, support, warrant, language, and vocabulary employed.
