Process improvement and quality management are vital aspect in every industry of business, and if ignored, then the disparaging Trojan horse of ignorance will discretely overtake any organization.
Supply chain specialists, however, will have the training and expertise to give proper focus and attention to improving processes and managing quality. Several approaches may be used when implementing a process or quality improvement initiative. Some of these approaches include Accelerated Improvement, Business Process Improvement (BPI), Process-Oriented Architecture (POA), Rummler-Brache Methodology, Helix Methodology, and Six Sigma. In this report, the Six Sigma approach will be examined, including benefits of the Six Sigma approach, implementing the Six Sigma approach, costs to consider, and risks and cautions of the Six Sigma approach.
THE SIX SIGMA APPROACH
Many Greek symbols are used for statistical representations including σ, pronounced and written as sigma. This symbol refers to a standard deviation from the mean in statistics, and it is often used in quality specification measurements. Thus, six sigma (6σ) refers to six standard deviations from the mean. Literally speaking, six sigma is a statistical measure of variability. However, in the context of quality and process improvement, six sigma refers to a statistical- and factual-based approach to quality and process improvement. In fact, “some argue that Six Sigma is an advanced quality improvement
