Dystopian literature is a genre of literature that explores social and political structures. Divergent is placed into the dystopian literary genre because the novel shows great amount of loss of identity,and government structure. The novel shows a good amount of loss of identity within the character Beatrice later known as Tris. The whole novel is revolved around the government structure, because they are controlling everything everyone does in the factions. Therefore Divergent is placed in the dystopian literature genre.

Veronica Roth continues to establish the dystopian world of Divergent through her book Four: A Divergent Collection. The book consists of four novellas: “The Transfer”, “The Initiate”, “The Son”, and “The Traitor”; these stories are in the character Four’s perspective. The first three novellas take place before the first book of the series. In the last story, the first book, Divergent, and “The Traitor” overlap one another. Along with the four novellas, there are three scenes from the first book in Four’s point of view.

Divergent depicted a teenage girl's experiences in a society where social norms and identity was essential to survival. Also, people unorthodox to their pledged social class were executed. Beatrice Prior, the female protagonist was classified as a divergent, dictating her fate as a Dauntless faction member. Divergents were immune to systematic approaches to propagandize a faction's values. Consequently, divergent faction members were dreaded for an insurgence against their government. Meanwhile, Beatrice was uncertain of the affiliation in which she belonged to. Roth wrote "I feel like someone breathed new air into my lungs. I am not Abnegation. I am not Dauntless. In the novel Divergent, by Veronica Roth, leadership is not just shown through the main protagonist, but also through the other characters. Four is a character in the book that possesses great leadership skills. He’s dependable and provides good advice, especially to Tris who gets in a lot of troublesome situations. Veronica Roth is mostly known for her books from The Divergent Series. All her books so far have been a success but the most controversial one so far is Allegiant. The issue with this book is that the plot has similar references to other topics and can be a very cliché story. Veronica Roth’s Allegiant details on how the protagonist ends up dying like other typical stories and how suspense is added to the story just to be disappointed.

The inequality of social classes becomes the theme of the novel because of its relation and the effects to the plots of the story. Dystopian society is a way that this author shows what the future will be like when one person takes charge of a small large group. The elements of dystopian society in Divergent by Veronica Roth are limitations, corporate control, and the factions. The limitations presented in this story include the walls in which the city of Chicago is surrounded by; no one is allowed outside the fence. Another limitation is the factions, which are groups that you are put into based on your personality. You are given a test and one chance to choose a new faction that best fits your wants and needs and if you fail to choose or succeed in a faction, you become factionless. Factionless means that you don’t belong anywhere are are viewed publicly as a disgrace. The last element addressed in this story is corporate control.

The main character in the book Divergent is a girl named Beatrice. Beatrice is developed throughout the book by having to do things that push her out of her comfort zone. Beatrice was born in the faction of Abnegation, where everything is simple and alike. Abnegation values selflessness, but Beatrice doesn’t feel like she is selfless. She decides to change to the faction of Dauntless, who values courage. Beatrice has to do things like jump off trains, and fight people to show she is courageous.
