The Dog’s living situation prior to being rescued was mostly unknown. However, Buddy the Pit Bull Terrier was living in a ranch house that a couple bought, he was abandoned there. The owners could not be contacted and made no effort to retrieve Buddy. The consensus of the new house owners and the local veterinarian and shelters is that Buddy was trained in a violent manner to be a fighting dog. The Age of Buddy is not completely known thought veterinarian know that he is not a puppy and mature (over the age of two and he is not geriatric most likely somewhere between 2 and 5 years old. There are two women Cherry and Lee, the life partners who moved into the house with four smaller dogs, two Cairn Terriers and two Scottish Terriers ranging from 2 to 16 years old, one named Stella 12 insists on being an alpha type dog and imposes her will on the other dogs. Buddy the Pit-bull believes strangers pose a threat almost exclusively people in this case not dogs of some sort to his owners and companion dogs. In order the handle this aggressive behavior, namely biting his owners are forced to make him wear a muzzle most all of the time. The initial method used to control Buddy’s behavior was introducing a new or outside person to the family. Wearing his muzzle he tried to attack the new person. Buddy was separated by Cesar Milan, who was firm with the dog and followed the animal until the two engaged each other eye to eye. Caesar then took control of the Dog getting him to sit by
Pit Bulls are known worldwide for being inherently dangerous and extremely vicious, but according to the American Temperament Test Society, Inc. 86.8% of American Pit Bull Terriers have passed their temperament tests better than Collies, Golden Retrievers, and Beagles. Many people don’t know that the term “bully breed” refers to more than forty breeds that hail from the same root breed. The history of the Pit Bull goes back to about the nineteenth century, during that time they were used to protect livestock, families, and even children as nannies (the Canine Journal). Today Pit Bulls are used as therapy dogs, police dogs, and of course a simple companion. Many myths about pit bulls circulate, which scares society into believing that they are dangerous to us and our families the question of banning Pit Bulls has been hotly discussed around the world, but banning Pit Bulls will not stop illegal breeding, fighting and distribution of Pit Bulls, other dogs from biting, and the problem will grow. The question of whether or not Pit Bulls should be banned is a hot topic in recent society, but the real question is should Pit Bulls be punished for the actions of their owners, or should laws be enforced at a higher degree.
How would you classically condition an adventuresome 2-year-old to be more fearful of running across a busy street near her house?
By: Blueberry the Pit Bull Therapy Dog The 6-year-old pittie with a fruit-related moniker was adopted from the Milton Animal League and works as a therapy dog in Massachusetts. Blueberry, affectionately called “Booberry” by her owner, visits rehab hospitals, nursing homes, humane societies, hospice patients, universities, and homes for the deaf and blind. When this dog is not working, Blueberry’s favorite activity is rolling in the grass. Patients confined to a facility, some temporary or permanent, look forward to Blueberry’s visits to ease the loneliness or remind them of life at home. One of Blueberry’s regular visits is to a patient named Dottie, who said the visits make her happy. “I am so lonely here. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to feel a dog — her ears and body and soft fur. It is so … perfect.”When Blueberry isn’t spreading cheer with patients, she attends BSL awareness walks with her owner and continues to change people’s minds “one pit bull at a
Most shelters and veterinarians can speak to the fact that dogs are greatly affected by previous and current owners. Dogs that have been neglected while they were puppies can negatively affect how they view people. Anxiety medication has become available to dogs and so has forms of therapy for dog’s social behaviors. The people who own “Pit Bull” breeds are more often than not those affiliated with illegal activity and violence. Veterinarian, Roger L. Welton, makes this statement “Pitt Bulls become a danger to society when they are purposely tormented and brutalized into being violent animals by sociopathic individuals who view the dogs as a means to elevate their status by having vicious dogs protect their property, or to make them money by cruelly fighting these animals with one another. It is the despicable human element that creates monsters where there were once innocent animals with the potential to make loving pets...Rather than blame the dogs for their irresponsible, often cruel treatment, we need to hold the people who mistreat them accountable for the consequences. Search and prosecution of these people needs to be more aggressive. Penalties need to be more severe, and the media needs to care more.”(Welton, "Web DVM") People that treat “Pit Bulls” violently lead to the dangerous behavior these dogs are known for. Most
Just barely 9 months old, the large dog blue, who was supposed to weigh about 61 pounds, is 33 pound and shivering in the cold. He was left outside tied to a stake by a thick metal chain over double his weight. Blue had lived his entire life at the hands of dog fighters. He was born at a dog fighting site and has never experienced real love. Since day one, he was abused and neglected
206). Further research shows that Pit Bulls aren’t the most dangerous breed of dog. They are ranked higher for their tolerance than they are for their aggression (Baldwin, S. 2016). No matter what real facts and statistics say, Pit Bulls are still being discriminated against and banned all around the world. As the years, have gone on, it has been harder and harder to own a Pit Bull. Many neighborhood or apartment complexes won’t allow you to live in their facilities if you own a Pit Bull or anything that remotely looks like a Pit Bull. If that isn’t enough, most insurance agencies won’t cover you, your family or your home if you own a Pit Bull (ReidHead, J, L 2017). Because of all these regulations and limitation when owning a Pt Bull, owners and Pit Bull advocates are working harder to push their point that it’s the owner that makes the dog. With proper training and responsible owners Pit Bulls are not a threat or a danger to society. Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any dog breed with they are trained and raised responsibly. In this paper, I be explaining how irresponsible Pit Bull owners are the cause of Pit Bulls aggression towards people and other animals by explaining the history of the breed, Pit Bulls involvement in dog fighting, gang violence and true statistics surrounding the breed. To solve this problem, I recommend that all future and
Pit bulls are the most misunderstood dog breeds in the world. When people hear the word pit bull they automatically think of dogs fighting and attacking. When people say "pit bull" they're usually referring to a range of breeds and, often, a mixed-breed dog. (Lawrence, C Louisville Magazine Feb 2007) People think they are a very dangerous breed of dog. Because of this, some areas do not allow pit bulls and breeds like them. Pit bulls are the leading culprit of dog bites in America, but on the other hand, they are the gentlest dogs people will ever meet. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association
Central Idea: When a pit bull is raised in a loving and responsible home they make great companions and family pets.
A certified dog trainer explained the deadly mauling of two Pit Bulls of a 22-year-old Virginia woman to drastic lifestyle changes in the life of the canine. Valerie Paul, who has testified in several court cases involving animal, said that the outside influence could cause the dogs turning on their owner.
Shelters put down pit bulls every day, thousands of them, because the media has deemed them vicious. Shelters believe that no one would want such a monster, so why should they keep them when that space could be used for a better dog? Animal violence in general is unacceptable, and we should not blame any animal more than another for protecting themselves.
It is true, Pit Bulls are more susceptible to becoming a fighting dog due to their build. Owners of these dogs do not care care of their own dog’s well being as shown by the dog’s environment. The animals are often held out in muddy chains twenty four hours a day, starved and beaten by their owners, never receiving any kind of love. Some dogs have their teeth filed for a sharp edge, are injected with harmful steroids, and spend numerous hours racing on a treadmill.(CBC News Windsor) In the ring, it gets even worse. When former orange county prosecutor George Hoovler entered a dog fighting scene, he was taken aback, truly shocked at what he was viewing. "I had been to a number of murder scenes," Hoovler remarks "but I was appalled." (Weir). The fighting pits themselves are typically compact and not sanitary at all due to the brutal brawl that takes place inside them. These dogs are trained to attack each other with aggression and no remorse, ripping jaws and veins a part until one is so nearly dead there can be a declared winner. The loser however if not already dead, is then tortured for their loss and even murdered in petrifying ways. Some may be shot, others could be electrocuted, drowned, and even hanging is a technique used. The fighting dogs do fight for a purpose, they fight to live. Despite the cruel abuse the dogs receive from their past owners, the dogs that live
This first fact is something everyone should know, Pit Bulls are not an actual breed of dog! Yes there is a breed called the American Pitbull Terrier, but that is what most people call a ‘Pitbull’, Pit Bull refers to the look of a dog. There is a rumour about the Pit Bull's bite, which stated that they had a bite strength of 1,600 pounds per square inch and was the strongest bite of any dog, and the is not true the Pit Bulls true bite strength is 235 pound per square inch, which is weaker than the German Shepherd and the Rottweiler. Despite having an overly aggressive reputation Pit Bulls don’t make good guard dogs, since they are to trusting of humans and might greet them as a new friend. The Pit Bull is known to be so caring to children that they are called nanny dogs. Pit Bulls have 31% more likelihood to attack an unknown individual. There is thought to be about 2.5 million Pit Bulls in america. In the year 1991, England and Wales banned Pit Bulls. At any given time there is a media scare about a specific breed and before Pit Bulls there was German Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, and even Bloodhounds had a media scare. Though Pit Bulls have been around since the 1800’s they only recently began to gain popularity in the 1980’s when there was crack downs on dog fighting rings. The most well known crackdown was in 2007, when Michael Vick’s ring was busted and 51 dogs were seized, of those
Pit bulls have been the main choice for dog fights throughout the years and are mostly bred just to keep more pit bulls in the ring, which has been the most inhumane. The puppies are raised in violence which creates vicious dogs for the fights. They have been selected for numerous fights because of their athletic build and ability to keep fighting even if they have broken legs or injured really badly. They have been selected for fights because of their athletic build and ability to keep fighting even if they have broken legs or injured really badly ( ). Any type of criminal likes the look of a mean companion that they could use for their own benefit, thus the pit bulls seemed ideal for any given circumstance. “Dogmen” are breeders that take dogs in for dog fights and their breed of choice as well is its. If a dog is under attack, naturally they are gonna fight their instincts and fight back. Like any living creature a dog has a fight or flight instinct that kicks in when threatened and they go on autopilot to protect themselves or their young as
Incase we’ve forgotten, all dogs are descendants of the wolf. Somewhere along the line we assumed that because the dog has been domesticated that we no longer have anything to fear. This concept, however, isn’t true. All animals act instinctively, they don’t act accordingly to their training. As long as their owners are present they might behave properly but who is to say how they will act when their owner is no longer present. We have to remember that we all have that flight or fight mode and therefore when faced with fear or danger we might not act logically but instead instinctively. The reasons why a pit bull or any animal may attack are to protect, for territory, possession, out of fear, to defend, for social status, frustration, and when in pain (ASPCA, para. 7-13). The dogs’ wild relatives are territorial and they live in certain areas and defend their land from intruders. Anyone willing to enter will face a charging dog. Dogs are a social species and if left alone they would create small packs of family and other dogs. If one of them
We took Lillie to Bass Pro Shops dog event. It was quite interesting to watch her mingle in the aisles, play with other dogs, stare down taxidermy, and run from the aquarium because it sounded like her bath. I enjoyed talking with several rescues and dog organizations. Olathe is a very dog friendly city
