I started with a topic concerning how the company Pandora was influenced by Greek mythology, but quickly began to realize there was little information about it. I changed my topic to the domestication of cats and dogs. There was three times as much information on the second topic. I knew a little about the domestication of dogs and cats. I knew a major reason for the domestication of dogs was for hunting. I also knew that cats played a role as a companion. The last thing I knew beforehand was that both animals were bred with a tame mate to produce an even tamer offspring. I want to find out how cats were domesticated, and if there is another reason for their domestication.
The arrival of Arthur Phillip’s first fleet in 1778 and the following arrivals of convicts and free settlers during the nineteenth century has been known as ‘the settlement of Australia’ a term believed to be a racial and cultural bias. Due to our history being dominated by the white man, and the influence of the concept of ‘terra nullius’, we are brought up to believe, from a European point of view, that the settlement was peaceful, and lawfully correct. However, being recorded as the first nation genocide, the word invasion best suits this colonization. In 2017 this argument is still debated, as protest and outcries attempt to force Australia to change its national day from the 26th of January to another date, as many indigenous
Being natural predators, they would hunt rodents, which encouraged Middle Eastern farmers to keep them around. Grange explains that this set up could be dubbed as “mutually profitable for both sides” (qtd. in Saey). Also, as many cat owners know, cats typically mark their territory and stay in one place. Using this knowledge, scientists have drawn conclusions that cats were transported to Europe; they didn’t migrate there themselves. This idea is backed up with evidence from mitotypes. “European wildcats carried one mitotype. It’s called clade I. A 6,400-year-old Bulgarian cat and a 5,200-year-old Romanian cat had a different type of mitochondrial DNA. They both had mitotype IV-A” (Saey). These mitotypes are relative to location, so when cats in Africa were found with mitotypes previously only found in Egypt, it suggested that cats were being transported by people. Saey also brings up a valid point, “Thirty-two of 70 cats from Southwest Asia also had that mitotype. That rapid spread may indicate that sailors traveled with cats, some of which could have jumped ship to find a new
Everybody in the town of Stamps always trembled with the anticipation. Today is the day that all the large classes from grammar school and high school were finally graduating. As the ceremony began the principal welcomed parents and friends. The principal talked about the “great leader” Booker T. Washington our great leader. Like a river diminishing to a stream and then to a trickle his voice became quiet.. He cleared his throat and said “ Our speaker tonight, who is also our friend, came from Texarkana to deliver the commencement address, but due to irregularity of the train schedule, he’s going to, as they say ‘speak and run’. He said that we understood and we wanted the man to know that we were most grateful for the time he was able to give
Chapter 16: Columbus Describes His First Voyage. I chose to cover this topic because Christopher Columbus is widely celebrated here in the United States for discovering the Americas. He is the man we credit for discovering the “New World” in which our beloved country would someday form. Two websites that helped me understand more about that topic were: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Christopher-Columbus/The-first-voyage and https://www.history.com/topics/exploration/christopher-columbus. The information is accurate, and I gained a better understanding of his first voyage after reading it.
There are animals that just can not be domesticated because they are they are the opposite of that. Sheep, goat, cow and pigs came from Southwest Asia. Cow also came from India and North America. Also Horse came from Ukraine. All of the domesticated animals came from different places so that made some civilizations work easier because it depends where they live and they may have that animal.
Domestication is a very useful skill that has remained the same for many years. Animals can be used for meat, milk, wool, etc. They are also used as farming tools and transportation. Certain animals much better suited to domestication than others; Jared Diamond calls this the “anna Karenina principle’ (Class Lecture).
Cats entered the New World on the Mayflower. A new breed called the American Shorthair was created. This tame cat would have been distinguishable from the wild cats by their color patterns, hair length, and size. The tame cat could help hunt for birds and rodents because they are hardy, tough, and athletic. It is also likely that the tame cat bred with the wild cats, so new breeds that had the characteristics of the wild ones entered the domestic stock. Cats were not always liked though. There were many superstitions about cats, which made people afraid of them. The cat became known as an indispensable pet for all the genuine witches. The black cat also became known as one of the symbols of Satan. These superstitions may have started because nightly, silent expeditions of feral cats, or their weird cries and shining eyes in the dark. So, cats have not always been accepted as a domestic pet.
Due to the domestication of cats and dogs their populations have skyrocketed. This is due in part to the lack of pet owners acting in a responsible manner. These responsibilities include the spaying and neutering of pets. These numbers of
A gravesite in Cyprus about 10,000 years ago contained remains of a wildcat with a human body. In the East about 10,000 year ago 600 million cats was traced back to five female species, the modern day cat is descended from their wild ancestor called Felis Silvestris Lybica. Cat breeds have been emerging for over 150 years, there is so many different kind of cat breeds. Almost every cat looks different in some way. “National academy of sciences study analyzed eight bones from at least two cats, the bones were found in Quanhucun, in China’s Shaanxi Province”(“Cats Were Domesticated At Least 5,300 Years Ago, Study Shows”). The main way of figuring out how far cats have been domesticated is by finding their bones. Finding the bones show everything you need to know about cats really. Researchers have found bones of multiple cats that they believed lived in Rural China with farmers to help catch mice, help around the
Dogs were the first animal, and the only large carnivore, to be domesticated. in both appearance and in both Dogs are not tame wolves, but how they became these unique companions to people is still being debated.
Dogs’ eagerness to please their masters is also a commendable trait which cats simply don’t have. Without this, it would be very difficult to train dogs for the many jobs they now hold, from aiding law enforcement personnel and herding sheep, to seeing-eye dogs and even helping exterminators locate hard-to-find infestations. Cats
Thesis/Preview: Today, I about the interesting history and mythology of cats: ancient Egyptian cats, negative cultural superstitions, and modern day domesticated cats.
Owning an animal can take up a lot of time. For most people time is of the essence, and spending a lot of time on an animal is unrealistic . Cats are able to live without their owners for days on end. They can usually find something to eat, and pee if plants for example. But dogs need to be put in kennels and looked after by another person. Dogs also have to be put on leashes when they are outside. Cats have the ability to roam freely because their owners do not have to worry about them causing a lot of trouble. A cat is allowed to be outside until late hours because owners know that the feline will make its way home, where as a dog at night is usually brought inside, or chained up outside.
While dogs and cats are a lot alike, you have to consider their differences before you choose your pet. As mentioned before cats do not require cleaning nor exercising or training, while dogs are in need of all these things. If you want to raise a pet then, try to manage your time before you choose your best
Thesis statement: After living with them, I have noticed that although there are innumerable similarities between the dog and the cat, there are also some important differences.
