Parents serve as role models for their children and guide them through their early years of development. Children model everything a parent does and incorporate what they see into their own lives. Parents are responsible for teaching their children the behaviors and skills necessary to interact in their everyday lives. Parents have a huge influence on their child’s social skills. Negative examples can be detrimental to a child’s development. The articles “My Father the Dope Dealer” and “My Father’s Double Life” prove that parents’ actions can have a negative effect on their children.
First, "My Father the Dope Dealer" illustrates the negative effects of parents' actions on their child. Tony talks about how his "public-school friends called [him] 'poor boy'" and how he was the kid who didn’t “have money for lunch and had an AWOL father whose name [his] mother seldom mentioned” (Dokoupil 5). Tony wasn’t treated well in school because of the legacy his father had left behind. His father’s actions had a deleterious effect on his social life as a child. Josephina talks about how she was "subconsciously drawn toward men like [her] father...possessive," and "aggressive" (Gonzalez 7). Fathers often serve as models for their children of what a man should be like and Josephina grew attracted to men like father because of the ideal he set for her. Women tend to surround themselves with men like their fathers so a negative father figure can really damage a woman’s life.
