Salih portrayed the rigid relationship between the changing of tradition to modern fundamentals by using an older villager speaking to a young guest in The Doum of Wad Hammud. Salih's narration choice is an important aspect when displaying the tradition since they influence each other over time. The Doum of Wad Hammud takes place in a small Sudanese village which has a special tree which is the symbol of strength and spiritual healing. Elders, such as the narrator at the beginning of the story found the Doum to be a symbol of power. Throughout the story, the tree is not only a symbol of strength and power but of protection over the village.
