The Dream Of The American Dream

The American dream is something that Americans have believed for a long time. It is defined as, by James Truslow Adams, “not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position”. The American dream is not true for some immigrants and the lower class citizens of the United States because though they work hard they still are not able to be successful in the “social order” of the American dream.
Most immigrants come to the United States for a better life in the land of promise but are often disappointed. For instance, in Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, Enrique’s mother, Lourdes, left Honduras for America to help her children have a better life only to not be able to send them money or clothes for a year because she couldn’t find a job that paid well enough to support her, her child in America and her children in Honduras. Not being able to provide for her family took away from her purpose of coming to America. Lourdes planed to be gone for at least 2 years but because she wasn’t legal and she started off with nothing she worked nonstop just to end up with not much more than she started with. Also, after eleven years of being in the United States, Lourdes shared “awash in guilt” trailer with eight people who had also left their
