On February 4th, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech called, “The Drum Major Instinct.” In this speech, he explains how instinct is just a desire to be or do something and is an impulse that we carry throughout our lives. Instinct is what deep down we want and know we can trust. It can be found in different kinds of forms; whether it be a book, real-world experiences or even something we’ve listened to, it’s always there. Instinct is what made her trust him, the desire to finally have someone to trust after so long, and the impulse to act on this instinct and go with it. Her decision was a good one as he was trustworthy, which furthers that you can always trust yourself. Instinct is something that we trust, we trust ourselves and what is deep inside we believe and we can find it in many different forms. In addition, instinct can also be seen as more of an animal instinct, which is something that you are born with knowledge of. This is most commonly seen in animals and when they start to behave a certain way when they are older or when they know right away how to hunt, it is because they grow up learning to be that way. Furthermore, instinct can be seen in many other things; taking a look back to October 14, 1940, instinct can be distinguished. On this day there had been a bomb known as the Luftwaffe bomb, and when it exploded it destroyed the entire Treasury Building in Whitehall. Winston Churchill had been dining there the same day when a bomb hit nearby and he then decided to have the kitchen staff leave, moments later the kitchen was bombed. Instinct saved those staff members from being killed. This kind of instinct can be considered a gut instinct, something deep down that you believe and trust, and that's what Winston Churchill felt. He went with that quick impulse and dismissed the staff as soon as he could. Trusting what you believe in deep down will always benefit you and it will turn out to be the best choice if Winston had not done that, those people would have been dead. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most famous civil rights activists in the history of the United States. He gave several important speeches and promoted non-violent protests. His most famous speech was “I Have A Dream”, around a quarter of a million patrons, black and white, attended this empowering speech at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963. The reason his speech was vastly successful in the movement against segregation and injustice was because of its repetitiveness.
But, by delving into similar personal stories as mine, you can observe that the reason for the immediate reaction was anger, and anger is an emotion, if not one of the most powerful. So claiming that instinct is not involved with feelings is not factual. Based on the cases highlighted above, we can conclude that human emotions are the driving force when it comes to decision making. Conversely, presuming that rational reasoning is the greater factor is inaccurate for multiple reasons. One of these reasons is found in a book by Tim O’Brien, The Things They Carried, in which he recalls the traumatic episode of how he killed a man while serving in Vietnam.
Another example of Instinct theory in the movie “27 Hours” is when Aron snaps his arm. This is the second attempt he intends to break off the arm. Aron is near death, but he has visions off a future son that he still does not have. He had visions off having a son, which he later had three years after the arm incident. If it weren’t for the image he had of having a kid, Aron probably wouldn’t have had the instinct and motivation to break his arm off.

It was originally given on the 28th of August in 1963 at Lincoln Memorial, Washington D.C., and it was one of the marks of history that one could say took the world by storm. The speech given referenced racism and segregation that had been occurring between white Americans of those of color, whether African Americans or Asians and even Native Americans.
