Phones are a distraction in class. Students have a difficult time separating themselves from their phones. The constant need to check statuses and stay connected have teachers struggling to teach. Miriam Morgenstern, a teacher at Lowell High School is ending her career as a teacher because she claims they are “an incredible distraction, and make it much more difficult to teach.” She went on to state that “it’s pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video.” Students and teachers are constantly surrounded by distractions that take the focus off of learning and preparing for their careers.

Despite the fact that cell phones are conduits for information they are also a major distraction in the classroom. “31% of teens who take their phones to school send or receive text messages everyday during class time.” (Document 5) Almost one third of the students in a classroom are devoting their attention to their cell phones rather than paying attention to the information given by the teacher. Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school 's most easily accessible phone was on the complete other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could 've used to contact the authorities more quickly. Did you know twelve to seventeen year old's have phones and use them up to sixty times a day? They research information off the internet everyday. Having phones are very important to them. Did you know that 30% of schools let their students get on their phones in class? Well if you did not know yes it is true. One half of many states let their students in the school district use phones in their classes. That is why they know it is right for them to be able to get on there phones in school and classes to. Cell phones are very helpful. There are people who think they are a distraction, but they are actually helpful, useful, and needed by students.

Every teacher has a different policy on cell phone use in class. In past years, cell phones were essentially banned from classrooms while more recently teachers have been more lenient with their policy. Educational devices such as computers and online learning have been embraced by many school districts, while cell phones which offer the same effect on learning have been outlawed. Advancements in technology can provide students with a new learning tools where the learning tools will be used in the real world. Students who use cell phones to access research information are able to reach a wide variety of current information. Teachers are also able to teach students the proper way to use cell phones in a professional setting. Cell phones can also raise engagement levels in classes. In the article Cell Phones in the Classroom by George Engel and Tim Green, “There was an observable rise in class participation when cell phones were used in the class” (44). While cell phones were once considered a distraction, the way society uses cell phones has changed. Likewise, the purpose of cell phones has shifted from solely communication to a variety of benefits. Cell phones should be allowed in classrooms for educational uses because there are so many different ways to learn and study using them.

Bullying has increased drastically because of technology. The power of the media has influenced the lives of many Americans negatively. With a touch of a finger away, Social Media’s such as Snapchat and Instagram have allowed people to not use them in a positive way. Cyberbullying is a resulting factor. People use those media platforms to bring people’s self-esteem down. People who use these trendy network platforms allows people to help spread gossip and rumors anonymously. People who get bully among these social media platforms have a greater risk of committing suicide and self-harm. Technology has made it much easier for people to bully using electronic devices.

Some people, such as the author(s) of “Schools Review Cell Phone Bans,” (2009) say that cell phones are a distraction to students while trying to learn; while other authors, such as the author of “Cell Phones in the Classroom,” (2010) Marie Bjerede, say that cell phones offer students the ability to branch out of text books and retrieve information from the internet right from a smartphone. The use of cellphones in school allows students to have more freedom when learning. For example, in the article “As Schools Lift Bans on Cell Phones, Educators Weigh Pros and Cons”, it explains that some of the features a cell phone has allows you to interact with other people, which is good because it helps with social skills and makes it easier to make friends. If students are interacting with other students, it is beneficial to them because they will be paying attention to working with their partner rather than being bored and listening to just the teacher talk. It is important that teachers are involved with their students because an elementary school teacher in Minnesota stated, “We need to stop pushing against the technology and start embracing it. The more we push back, the more we separate ourselves from the students.” If teachers are involved with their students and don’t discourage cell phones, the students will actually have fun in class and will grow closer to their teachers. Cell phones are beneficial to schools because it provides a way where students don’t have to be distracted when there teacher is teaching them.

Cell phones are ending up increasingly famous these days, with its easy to use plan and helpful multi-work. Technology has been All around the globe, including elderly and youths, have their own cell phone. The usage of smartphones is very harmful to young children because it affects their learning, social and health.

Today, electronics have become important in our daily life. Even Though modern electronics help make our lives simpler, but it can also be utilized negatively. Smartphones are no longer used only for texting and calling. They are high-tech devices that can access the internet, emails, and social media. However, arguments on whether these functions are necessary for students in high school are beginning to surface. Despite the fact that phones can be utilized educationally and serve as a learning too, this same technology can also be utilized negatively at the wrong time. In agreement with many teachers, “a fair amount of teachers say cell phones have officially replaced chewing gum as the new classroom menace. Constant ringing, chirping, buzzing and texting are interfering with lessons and student learning, and some students are storing notes on their cell phones to cheat on tests”(Hart). In order for kids to learn in a fair and healthy setting, smart phones should not be allowed in school environment because of the potential for distractions and cheatings; furthermore, it can also cause degeneration of social skills.
