The Effect Cellphones Have In School The future of technology is coming, in today’s time you can’t go anywhere without seeing a teen taking a photo, random people listening to music or someone talking on the phone. In this upcoming generation life is centered around technology, especially in schools. The use of technology in schools is rising higher and higher by the day which is affecting the way of learning and concentration students use to have before cell phones or computers existed. Another issue thats wrong with upcoming generations of cell phones is the cyberbullying that happens. We are in an era of ubiquitous social networking. Where adolescent cruelties can be far more lasting. All of which underlines a central question of our new digital age. Cell phones in school affects many peoples lives, such as facebook. The internet website Facebook is a main reason or cause for a lot of kids to get bullied by people they may not know, which can push people as far as death or severely hurting themselves.
The use of cellphones is absolutely intolerable in many schools nationwide, it is a distraction to the student to keep them from learning. Phones are a distraction in class. Students have a difficult time separating themselves from their phones. The constant need to check statuses and stay connected have teachers struggling to teach. Miriam Morgenstern, a teacher at Lowell High School is ending her career as a teacher because she claims they are “an incredible distraction, and make it much more difficult to teach.” She went on to state that “it’s pretty hard to compete with a very funny YouTube video.” Students and teachers are constantly surrounded by distractions that take the focus off of learning and preparing for their careers.
Despite the fact that cell phones are conduits for information they are also a major distraction in the classroom. “31% of teens who take their phones to school send or receive text messages everyday during class time.” (Document 5) Almost one third of the students in a classroom are devoting their attention to their cell phones rather than paying attention to the information given by the teacher. Students not giving their full attention don’t receive all of the lesson
Have you ever heard of the gruesome Columbine High School massacre? This incident occurred on April 20th 1999 and involved two students embarking on a shooting rampage, killing twelve students, a teacher and wounding twenty three others. Unfortunately during this incident, the school 's most easily accessible phone was on the complete other side of the school in the library. Perhaps some of these lives could have been saved if the students in this class had cell phones that they could 've used to contact the authorities more quickly. Cell phones are very helpful. There are people who think they are a distraction, but they are actually helpful, useful, and needed by students.

Teachers are also able to teach students the proper way to use cell phones in a professional setting. Cell phones can also raise engagement levels in classes. While cell phones were once considered a distraction, the way society uses cell phones has changed. Likewise, the purpose of cell phones has shifted from solely communication to a variety of benefits. Cell phones should be allowed in classrooms for educational uses because there are so many different ways to learn and study using them.
Bullying has increased drastically because of technology. The power of the media has influenced the lives of many Americans negatively. With a touch of a finger away, Social Media’s such as Snapchat and Instagram have allowed people to not use them in a positive way. Cyberbullying is a resulting factor. People use those media platforms to bring people’s self-esteem down. People who use these trendy network platforms allows people to help spread gossip and rumors anonymously. The use of cellphones in school allows students to have more freedom when learning. For example, in the article “As Schools Lift Bans on Cell Phones, Educators Weigh Pros and Cons”, it explains that some of the features a cell phone has allows you to interact with other people, which is good because it helps with social skills and makes it easier to make friends. If students are interacting with other students, it is beneficial to them because they will be paying attention to working with their partner rather than being bored and listening to just the teacher talk. It is important that teachers are involved with their students because an elementary school teacher in Minnesota stated, “We need to stop pushing against the technology and start embracing it. The more we push back, the more we separate ourselves from the students.” If teachers are involved with their students and don’t discourage cell phones, the students will actually have fun in class and will grow closer to their teachers. In order for kids to learn in a fair and healthy setting, smart phones should not be allowed in school environment because of the potential for distractions and cheatings; furthermore, it can also cause degeneration of social skills.
