Biology 11 SL Pooria Taheri Block 2 Osmolarity in Potatoes Research question: What is the effect of salt solution concentration on the mass in russet potatoes? Background Osmosis is a process which molecules of a solvent pass through membrane from a less concentrated area to a more concentrated area until it equalize the concentration on both side. Isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic solutions can be generally used to compare concentration of a solute in two solutions. Hypertonic solution is when one of two solution has a higher concentration of a solute and we call this type of solution plasmolyzed. Isotonic solution is when both solutions have the same concentration of solute and we call this type of solution flaccid cell. Hypotonic solution is when one of two solution has a lower concentration of a solute and we call this type of solution turgid cell. Hypothesis: I predicted that as more concentrated salt solution added to the potatoes, it will cause the mass of them to decrease. because as higher concentration of sault solution cause water to move out the cell. The reason being is because water moves from a hyperosmotic area to (more concentration) a hypsometric area (less concentration).
