Abstract Background Healthy behavior during women’s pregnancies is an important factor in preventing maternal mortality, maternal morbidity, premature birth, stillbirth, perinatal death, neonatal death and low birth weight. As in the rest of the world, mobile phone applications and text messaging are widely used in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) in Asia that have major burdens of maternal deaths and preterm births. This type of communication has also been explored in interventions to improve health outcomes for a variety of conditions, and it seems plausible that it could help to increase healthy behavior in pregnant women. This review will assess the effectiveness of text messaging and mobile applications (commonly described as…show more content…
I will develop a comprehensive search strategy in order to identify all eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Databases I will search include PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Web of Science, Embase, CiNii, Igaku-chuo zasshi, IndMED, China National Knowledge Infrastructure. I will also search grey literature. I will assess the risk of bias in all included trials using the Cochrane Collaboration instrument2. If data permit, I will pool data in meta-analysis. I will report study characteristics and results in summary tables and will also provide a narrative synthesis of my findings. I will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidance in reporting my review. Background and Significance Worldwide, pregnant women and newborn babies are at risk of adverse health outcomes.3 There were close to 300,000 maternal deaths and around 15 million preterm babies in 2013.45 This is also true in Asian countries. More than 30% of maternal deaths and 50% of preterm births worldwide occur in Asia.4,5,6 Particularly, countries in South Asia have the second highest burdens of maternal mortality and preterm births after Sub-Saharan Africa.46 For example, under the effort by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), India significantly decreased maternal mortality rate.7 India achieved its target for MDG five as reducing maternal mortality to 108
