In the past fifty years, our world has seen remarkable poverty alleviation. Access to running water, electricity, and high-quality healthcare are becoming more common globally as countries continue to develop. The increased mechanization of production has alleviated many problems that poor countries have faced in the past such as hunger, high infant mortality rates, and disease; but the increased industrialization of low-income nations has placed a huge burden on policymakers. Populations continue to face a growing list of unfortunate externalities. One dire consequence of industry that requires urgent attention is environmental pollution. Increased economic activity produces an increasing amount of waste that producers must dispose of. Of particular interest to policymakers are air pollutants, which are easily disposed of through pipes and vents by producers at a minimal cost. Air pollution has been shown to increase respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and increased cancer rates. Additionally, air pollution has substantially increased the amount of greenhouse gases in the earth 's atmosphere. Such changes in our climate will lead to species extinction, loss of biodiversity, and increased social issues. The wide-ranging effects on humans include a decreasing supply a safe drinking water, food shortages, and natural disasters. Among the methods that governments use in response to these alarming realities are emissions trading programs. By turning to the concept of
More than half of the human population knows what pollution is but we are still not ready to face it's damaging consequences. Pollution occurs when pollutants contaminate the natural surroundings; which brings about changes that affect our normal lifestyles adversely. Pollution comes in many forms and no matter where you live, you've probably seen some form of it. Some litter of NYC city streets to the smog that lingers ov0er LA to the plastic trash that floats in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the visible signs of pollution are more than evident. The main reason for a why pollution has gotten too out of control is that our desire for more “stuff” has led to our old stuff being thrown away at an alarming and unnecessary rate. As humans we have impacted the environment in so many different ways. The 3 main pollutants i will be talking to you about is water, air, and soil pollutions since these are the three main ones that are affecting not only us as humans but our planet that we live on.. These three main pollutants have affected the environment in many different ways such as climate change and even habitat destruction towards our planet and is in need to be taking some Extreme Measures and actions in order to decrease the pollution to our home.
Over the past century there is a drastic change on Earth's Atmosphere mainly because of interference of human activities like using fossil fuels as a source of energy, and emission of greenhouse gases due to industrial processes. These activities have release a large amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases causing Earth’s average temperature to rise by 1.4’ and is expected to rise up to 11.5’F such changes can result in undesirable consequences.
A. Attention Device: According to Richard Schiffman’s 2015 New Scientist article, air pollution is a big problem in the United States and worldwide. Air pollution kills approximately fifty-five thousand people annually in the U.S. and three point three million people worldwide.
In places such as South America where deforestation is prominent, nations should conserve and protect more land. For the sake of water quality, it is right for the agriculture industry to cut back on the use of harmful fertilizers and pesticides. In countries where many forms of air pollution are unregulated, it is ethical for these nations to set more restrictions on pollutants such as PM. Just as with other air pollutants, it is right for countries to regulate greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in order to slow the rate of climate change. While these decisions are ethical, nations will not make them without a cost. Connections between modern industries and pollution are prominent, and change will be difficult. For this reason, governments must break down the wall separating conservation and advancement. Although some may believe they will have no effect on climate change, the United States should take greater steps in becoming a global leader of environmentalism. Looking ahead, by neglecting to protect the environment, the future will hold destructive costs. Like a bomb counting down to its last minutes, the world does not have much time left. Overall, if humans continue to place business before the environment, there will be no turning
Over the past few years, air pollution has been one of the major problems encountered in the California central valley. The Central Valley, also called as the Great Valley of California, is comprised of approximately about 20, 000 square miles. It is consisted of two parts, the northern portion is called the Sacramento Valley and the southern portion is called the San Joaquin Valley (U.S.). There are several factors that could have contributed to the amount of air pollution in the air, some of which humans have the ability to prevent and mitigate. Many of the activities that we do in our daily lives could result to the development of air pollution without us even knowing it. In this paper, we will discuss what air pollution is and gain a better understanding of what air pollution is, determine its causes, economic, social, and health impacts, and create solutions that would address the problem of air pollution in the California central valley.
Beyond environmental issues related to poverty are those that can increase from economic growth itself as countries become more industrialized, rise their agricultural production, and spend greater amounts of fossil fuels, the environment often suffers. The challenge facing policymakers worldwide is to control economic growth in a way that increases its benefits and reduces its costs, in terms of harm to both the environment and to the free market system. (Dahlberg,2012). This essay will argue that either an emissions tax or a tradable permit policy can achieve the best solution for the environment. Booth tax and tradable permits have benefits and drawbacks. Taxes leave businesses and consumers with flexibility to determine the lower cost to reduce the environmental harm. Nevertheless, Pollution permits give the incentive to develop new technologies aimed at inexpensively reducing pollution and it is more effectively than taxes.
Environmental pollution is a very serious problem in American and the world. Environmental pollution has many different faces from air pollution to water pollution. But the main one I am going to focus on is air pollution and how it affects us in a negative way. In this paper I am going to show you how air pollution can affect us and how it can affect the world. I am also going to show how we can prevent pollution from getting any more out of hand that it already has.
Air pollution is a major cause of disease and death in large cities, which can be prevented. Despite improvements to enhance air quality through the years, the San Joaquin Valley does not meet the requirements of federal and state health ozone levels and particulate pollutants. Ozone is particularly a problem during the summer because high temperatures "cook" chemicals with sunlight to produce smog. Particles, meanwhile, represent a problem during the fall and winter season, when the increase in vehicle emissions and investing layers prevent the spread of these contaminants. Contaminant particles with a size of 10 microns or less (PM10) are a mixture of soot, chemicals, dust, salt, dirt, metals, smoke and toxins. PM10 are very small, about one-seventh the width of a human hair. Although they are micro size, they are dangerous as they can penetrate the body's natural defenses and concentrate on the depth of the lungs. Exposure to high concentrations of these particles can cause heart attacks, increase the risk of lung cancer, worsening conditions such as asthma and bronchitis, and reduce the function of the lungs. PM10 also include the group of particles known as PM2.5 refined. The sources of air pollution and related poor health are in transportation, power generation, home, for example, and vary between cities and regions. Effective interventions can reduce air pollution related diseases and produce health benefits, example, sustainable transport, energy-efficient buildings
We are getting rid of materials that the world would benefit from. Cutting down trees that produce an enormous amount of oxygen for the people can damage the lives of many. “Air pollution is a grave environmental reality affecting many people across the world and affecting their health and the overall quality of life” (Class notes, Lecture 6).There are certain that we should be protecting, but many do not see a reason to do so, we look at the many products that can come from it not the quality of life.
“To taste the morning air! The deliciously crisp and sweet air for which I long” (O'Sheridan, 2011). Have you tasted the salty air of the sea or the cold, crisp air of the Colorado Rockies? According to recent studies scientists have found that the human lung can “taste” bitter substances in the air. (Connor, 2010) So how about the layered bitter, astringent, smoky taste of Shanghai? In January of 2013, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing reported that a toxic cloud the size of the Greenland covered parts of China causing the levels of a particulate air pollution that seeps into the lung, vein, and heart tissue, to surge above 850 micrograms per cubic meter. According to the UN, 20 micrograms per cubic meter is considered to be the highest safe level. (Meyer, 2017)
Having over 121,000 kilometers of rail lines throughout China and 228,218 kilometers throughout the United States transcontinental travel throughout the countries has become immensely accessible. The use of such transports has subsequently resulted in an emittance of pollutants such as nitrous oxide, particulate matter, and carbon dioxide. The increase of the anthropocentric activity dictates the positive feed back loop of the total emissions of criteria pollutants.
Air pollution is a global issue that the community should act upon to prevent any further consequences. Air pollution is caused by toxic chemicals in the air. The essential wellsprings of pollution are heaters in processing plants, motors in vehicles and the consuming of junk. Air Pollution is a hurtful substance to the air that brings harm to the Earth and human wellbeing. Some air pollutions come back to earth as acidic rain, which it can harm crops, and make streams harmful for other plant and creature life. Haze is another outcome from air pollution, which is destructive to people. Global warming can likely be a reason, because of air pollutions, which makes the earth temperature increase. Air pollution is a global issue that concerns the environment because it can negatively affect the health of the environment, cause global warming, as well as acidification. If everyone lets this event continue, then it can affect the wellbeing of the environment and the individuals around it.
Scientists now suspect that a significant cause of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s could be the air we breathe. We have to get out of here, the air people breath is not cleaner, and we can see that at the sunset when the sky looks brown and all the health problems people have become a harsh consequence of industrial growth across the world. As defined by Chris Woodford, air pollution is a gas released in a big enough quantity that harms the health of people or other animals, kill plants or stop them growing correctly, and damage or disrupt different aspects of the environment. There are many effects of air pollution, and also there are many things that cause it, for example excessive use of chemicals and cars. People cannot live without fresh air, there is nothing better than breath clean air after a long day of work, but nowadays it is scarce the place where the air smells fresh. Air pollution is affecting all humans, and we cannot close our eyes to the problems because the sense that detects this issue is our smell. Unfortunately, people are not doing something to decrease the air pollution, on the contrary, almost everything people do diary affects the air quality, as Woodford explains in his article, “…burning things, using household or industrial chemicals, or producing large amounts of dust has the potential to cause air pollution.” People have to be aware of air pollution, its causes and effects, it is caused by overpopulation and can lead to health problems, but
Proctor and Gamble (American multinational consumer goods corporation ), recently released a statement stating that polluted air can contain more than 200 chemicals, that can potentially be a catalyst to the faster-aging skin. Studies done on this topic have proven that women ages 30-40, who are living is polluted arias, have a 10 percent chance of obtaining aging skin symptoms. The effects of air pollution affect everyone, not just women. Inhaling air pollution takes away at least 1-2 years of a typical human life. It has effects as small as burning eyes and itchy throat too as large as breathing problems and death. Air pollution is a problem for anyone who has to encounter it. Nearly 2 million babies die a year due to air pollution. A study done in 2012 proves that air pollution is a devastating occurrence in the world. 570,000 children under five years old died from respiratory infections such as pneumonia, tied to indoor and outdoor air pollution. Fortunately, there are some things that can be done to prevent further damage. First, air pollution can be reduced through efforts in the home. Second, communities can help solve air pollution problems. Third, efforts worldwide can assist at the end of air pollution. If efforts were made to officially stop air pollution, millions of lives would be saved.
Air pollution is the largest killer in the developing world, taking the lives of over 7 million people annually. While air pollution does take place in America daily, we are not exposed to the high levels of PM 2.5, PM10, and other pollutants that developing countries are. It is very much real, and a global challenge that affects us, as a world as whole, causing global warming, and emission of greenhouse gases. In America we have air regulations in effect, along with other developed countries like Canada, and France, in an attempt to regulate the amount of air pollution released in the air. While we are not a perfect nation, or the most Earth friendly country, we, the population, do not consider the long term effects of air pollution. Many people living in developing countries are basically forced to live in these harsh conditions because of how poor they and their country are; the lack of enforcement on air regulations contributes strongly to the problem. This results in smog filled cities, poor living conditions, millions of premature deaths, and many affected by the heavy amount of air pollution that is shamelessly forced into the air.
