Canned food is processed in order to increase the shelf life of certain products. It can be used to offer support to people in inaccessible areas such as military bases or people may use it at home to prepare the cooking processes easier (Callahan, 2011). While canned food has numerous benefits, increasing concerns are beginning on the safety and health implications of food with a shift from earlier concerns on the sanitation of canneries. The poor health and sanitation challenges initially associated with canned food have been progressively eliminated. This happened with the help of introduction of standards, which resulted in technology increasing efficiency and quality associated with production. Health challenges present the leading concern over canned food with matters ranging from the salt content to botulism all that have varied health implications. The chemicals associated with the packaging of food including BPA (bisphenol A) are used in the lining of food cans with the intention being the cushioning of the can’s content and the metallic part of the can (Callahan, 2011). An additional negative impact linked with canned relates to the leakages of aluminum through the cans and thus contaminate the food as will be discussed. Because of the packaging, canned food may have a negative influence on health and may lead to health issues such as cancer, botulism,
Food played a pivotal role in the daily lives of all persons in Vichy France during World War II. The finding and gathering of food consumed long hours of the average person’s life through ration cards and queques. The search and the worship of food was an integral part of life to all people from the general public to the Resistance Fighters. Food is a necessity of all life, for the Nazi Germans it was a tool to control the Vichy French Regime and people as the daily hunted for food and reveled in eating it.
The human body is a complex machine and it requires fuel to run. This “fuel” is known as food and for the body to be efficient, it needs to ingest the good fuel. At a glance, I thought that Food, Inc., would not make such an impact on me since it is an American documentary film. But, since our world is getting smaller, our resources are being transported and exchanged around the globe. So the food consumed in another continent can be found on the dinner tables of a different country.
Not only are we wasting time, but we are remaining silent and still, while watching the quality of life crumbling. The food and eating habits, are the direct victims; the ingredients, quality and the provenance not printed or hidden on labels is the fraud that we are paying for. Consequently, for the agenda that creates the deterioration of the products affect us at least twice: First for the overall quality and the price increase that’s justified through the packaging that is in most cases is cause of pollution and works at his best for the disguising what we should be aware of. As a secondary cause I can bring forward the possibility of needing medical attention. Adding a third one is the crime that rates as the worst deprivation of humanity’s property, found in drinking
Food, health and medical technologies have a large impact on individuals and communities today and in the future. Throughout this paper, discussion will involve the issues that society faces regarding food and health and how we can create a healthier and safer world for our future.
Opposing view point online collection in the article “Food Safety” explains that food safety is an issue that very few people think about until they become sick. Opposing viewpoints online collection supports their explanation by giving statistics on the amount of people that get sick each year along with the different types of foodborne illnesses there are. The author’s purpose is to show the dangers of foodborne illnesses by estimating that “40 million people experience foodborne diseases every year. In order to eliminate foodborne illnesses they must set a certain food standard. The author establishes a formal tone for the reader. This work is significant because it informs the readers what we need to do for solve the food safety issues
Everyday, throughout the world, restaurants throw away large amounts of uneaten food. Public Health laws prevent them from re-serving or reusing this food, and, for similar reasons, they cannot simply give it away to hungry people. We opted to review this as our messy situation due to the impact that this has on people and the environment.
With this increase in the productivity of farmers, came a proliferation of food processing industries and fast food restaurants. These food processing industries and restaurants capitalized on the abundant, overly cheap commodity crops to their advantage; to make profit, and to the disadvantage of poor Americans. During processing of these commodity crops, the natural nutrients that give these foods their natural flavors are destroyed. To replace these, food additives and flavorings are added to restore their taste and prolong their shelf life. Often these chemicals contain some harmful elements that affect the way our bodies use food. These highly processed foods, dense in calories,
Food borne illness is a big issue in the United States. Each year up to 5,000 people die from foodborne illness… something that plays a role in foodborne illness is boxing labels such as expiration dates. Another thing that is another big part in foodborne illness is the way it processed or cooked. When the government monitors food safety, there are fewer foodborne illnesses that make people sick.
The film I watched was titled Food, Inc. This film examines the food industry and the industrial production of the many products we eat today (meats, grains, and vegetables). This film is trying to explain how agribusiness is producing food that is not healthy. In the film they also assess how todays agribusiness is harmful to the environment and abusive to the animals and workers. This film examines where the food we eat is coming from, how it is being produced, and who is producing it. They film is diving into how few giant corporations are basically controlling the growth, processing and sale of food in this country. In the film they give a statistic, which states that the top 4 meat-producing companies in the country are responsible for
Lastly, the author states that the chemists had only tested for eight chemicals that cause dizziness and nausea, however there might be other chemicals responsible for the health issues which are present in the canned food. Since the food was not tested for these chemicals it is not possible to eliminate the fact that such chemicals might be present in the food. Unless the food is tested for such chemicals the conclusion that the canned food is not hazardous to health is dubious.
The argument of the usage of additives and other chemicals stems from the activity of our past ancestors and the numerous of tests a product with a food additive undergoes. The common counterargument relies on evidence of past civilizations fermenting alcohol or preserving meats and other food products with short life by using chemicals (National Center for Home Food Perseveration). Therefore, if our ancestors added these “preservatives” into their daily products, we can too without negative effects. Even though many studies have proven some food additives produce the risk to the human population and the environmental scope, those who disagree state the experiment is
According to Allen et al. (2016), the chemical composition of flavors contains toxic substances that can lead to serious health complications. In the early 2000s, flavoring in food products became a huge issue after eight workers who had previously worked at a microwave popcorn processing plant were said to have critical bronchiolitis obliterans, inflammation of the lung causing obstruction in its airways, which later became known as “popcorn lungs.” Several investigations were conducted by NIOSH, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, within five processing plants. They concluded that these severe respiratory complications were solely due to the presence of hazardous chemicals such as diacetyl, acetoin, and 2,3-pentanedione in the butter flavoring. Likewise, it was also gathered that most of the workers were operating near the butter-flavoring mixers, and large tanks of heated oil that contained low concentrations of these toxins, particularly diacetyl.
Subsequent to investing impressive energy picking and get ready nutritious food for our families, it can be really disappointing to discover that the items we are utilizing to cook, prepare, eat and store food with may really put our families' wellbeing at risk. Materials, for example, Teflon, BPA, lead, aluminum, phthalates, and melamine are regularly found in ordinary kitchenware items yet have been attached to disturbing medical problems. The uplifting news is there are numerous more secure options and in addition things you can maintain a strategic distance from.
A common chemical used in food packaging called bisphenol A (BPA), is found to have some health risks. Jose Antonio Brotons, Maria Fatima Olea-Serrano, Mercedes Villalobos, Vicente Pedraza, and Nicolas Olea show in their article that foods that are in lacquer coated cans may have estrogenic activity.
Food is an essential constituent in human life. Nevertheless, some foods can be detrimental to a person’s organism by causing life-threatening diseases. For that reason, food safety comes into play. Food safety is a scientific discipline describing handling,
