Please briefly describe the different types of water pollution mentioned throughout the "Poisoned Waters" video. Fertilizers, Nitrogen and Phosphorous caused algae which poisoned the waters. It caused a dead zone. The farmers who own chickens was allowing the manure to pollute the water. The humans race is all responsible as we pollute our water by throwing garbage into it. Soap, household cleaning agents, toothpaste, and other plastic, lubricant and fuels are all poisoning our water.

Around the world people are suffering from the problem of having a safe and clean water, there are more than 633 million people lack access to safe water. Remote countries in Africa are mostly the victim of having unsanitary water sources.

The human body is contained mostly of water. Plants and animals will stop to exist without water. Water is used in transportation, cleaning, and other walks of life. It is not hard to figure out that water is one of the planet’s most valuable useful things (Bottcher 2012). For nearly my whole life, my family and I have lived beachside near the popular tourist attraction Ron Jon’s in Cocoa Beach, Florida. With that being said, since the beach lures in many tourists, these tourists dispose of their trash irresponsibly and in many scenarios the trash ends up in the ocean polluting the water. Furthermore, water pollution is significant to acknowledge because due to the pollution, there are typically negative consequences that follow interfering with the surrounding marine life or the environment in general. For instance, sometimes runoffs occur that later contaminate the water fabricating toxic fungal blooms within the body of water. When this happens, it has been believed that cancer levels rise in the area from this occurrence worsening the health of humans nearby in the surrounding community. Also, sometimes when pollutants enter bodies of water the overall temperature rises. This raise in temperature easily creates ecological dead zones where fish are forced to evacuate the area in search of cooler waters where they can survive and thrive properly. Water contamination is one of the reasons are health and many other people’s health is not good. Half of the world’s hospital beds are being used for people that are suffering from a water related disease. Globally, about 1.8 billion people use a drinking water source that is contaminated with feces. Contaminated water can transmit many different diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. Eighty-eight percent of diarrhea are estimated to be attributable from unsafe drinking water.

Experiments were done on the water quality and the contamination of groundwater. First, I observed the effects that different pollutants had on groundwater. I predicted that the experiments with the oil and vinegar would create the most contaminations to the water. When the laundry detergent were mixed with the groundwater, it created a light green color with a pleasant smell. My lab report was based on how ground water could be affected by contaminants that surround us everyday. “ Access to safe drinking water depends not only on the quality of water at source but also on contamination throughout it's way to the user and practices related to purification and sanitation” ( Mishra, S., & Nandeshwar, S. 2013).I was very surprised that the detergent contaminated the water. I thought that the detergent would stay in the soil but it ended up going through the soil into the water. Which then left the water bubbly and dark. To develop a better understanding of water contamination, a field comparison between two separate water sources was conducted. The first water sample was gathered from the Simmons Park Pond and the second from a NES water fountain. The data gathered from this experiment was used to answer several questions regarding the prevalence of contamination in nearby water sources. The field analysis ultimately concluded what contaminants had the greatest prevalence, thereby exemplifying the defining differences between the two water sources.

The contamination of water and drinking supplies with high concentrations of nutrients from animal waste has fatal effects on different organisms. “Elevated nitrates in drinking water...hinders the ability of the...blood to carry oxygen” (Hribar 4), which can cause serious health conditions such as birth defects, miscarriages, and can even lead to death in seniors and infants. Although nitrates may have the greatest consequences on younger and older individuals, adults that consume tainted water develop increased risks of “cancer and non-cancer diseases...diabetes...and neurodevelopmental defects” (Halden and Schwab 16). Contaminated drinking water poses a serious threat to human health, and can affect people’s happiness and quality of life.

Many Americans may suffer from drinking contaminated water and not even know it. For example, In Flint Michigan, they were once getting a nice clean water supply from Lake Huron, but they had to pay the city of Detroit. So the city council decided they could cut costs by using the water from the Flint River. The river was known to the local people as filthy and thought that it was a joke switching to the river water. Once they switched their water supply to the river they had noticed the water was brown and looked dirty. After testing they found out the river water was nineteen times more corrosive compared to the Lake Huron water since it so corrosive it eats at the water. Community water fluoridation is "the controlled addition of fluoride compound to a public water supply to achieve a concentration optimal for dental caries prevention" (Rockville,2000, cited in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015, p.1). Notwithstanding the general perception of community water fluoridation worldwide, which recognizes it as an opportunity, some opponents see it as a hazard.

Everyone requires water for their survival, so fortunately, as of 2004, the World Health Organization reported that for the first time in human history, 50% of households in the world have access to running water. Unfortunately, the quality of that water has been slipping for decades. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 90% of the world’s water has become contaminated in some way. So in addition to pissing oneself, people who rely on public water supplies need to worry about contracting serious diseases as well as exposing themselves to dangerous chemicals. Let me dive in to these problems by first looking at the sources of the water and pollution. Next I’ll talk about waterborne disease, and finally the effects of chemical contamination on the world’s water supply.

Contaminated water is the cause of many life-threatening diseases including diarrhea, the second biggest child-killer in the world. Diarrhea is estimated to cause 1.3 million child deaths per year. Water contamination can spread diseases such as hepatitis B, dysentery, cholera and typhoid fever. High levels of arsenic, lead or fluoride may lead to both acute and chronic diseases in children.

Few resources are essential to human survival. Access to clean water is the most critical of all. Water is a vital resource responsible for sustaining all life on earth. However, clean water is in short supply, but in high demand in all parts of the world. It is thought that most Americans have access to safe, affordable, clean water right from their taps. However, the media is uncovering the true nature of America’s deteriorating water situation. Americans have reason to be seriously concerned about the state of their drinking water. So what really is on tap in America?
